Something went horribly wrong with the FA's Fixtures Computer when it picked out this week's games! Firstly both Manchester teams are at home, which is why City play on Sunday. Secondly, there are three games on two TV channels (Gooners are on Setanta at lunch-time), and finally all four teams who took part in Thursday night's UEFA Cup games are playing teams not in the same competition. So that leaves Man United and Aston Villa playing on Saturday. This week we ought to say "When Sunday comes"!
Another unfortunate aspect of the fixtures is that Spurs have to play at Anfield. Let's face it, it's unfortunate every year when we have to travel there, because we rarely get anything out of the game. Mind you, these days we rarely get anything out of any away game, and Thursday night's trip to Cyprus was no exception to this unfortunate rule.
Spurs did have two away wins at the end of last season (at Middlesbrough and Charlton), but the last time we beat Liverpool in the League was August 1993, when Teddy Sheringham scored both goals, and Nigel Clough (now a long serving manager of Burton Albion) scored the Liverpool goal. We have also had a couple of famous Cup wins in the nineties, but as is the case with each of the top four sides, a league win on their soil is currently something of a miracle.
So, off we go then for another 200 mile trip, which we'll enjoy for the banter with the locals, pathetically singing "Sign on" during the Gerry Marsden intro, and er ..... that's about it really. Anfield is one of my favourite away grounds though, and I was lucky enough to be there for the last day of the Kop before it became an all-seater stand. (I'm not sure they don't all stand up now though!)
On the ride up, we can play "Guess Benitez's team selection", although it will be easier to guess Martin Jol's selection. Paul Robinson will retain his place, despite another unconvincing session between the posts in Cyprus (there were close shots that he did not have covered). Chimbonda, Dawson, and Kaboul, are sure starters, especially as Ricardo Rocha is out, although Anthony Gardner will be on the bench after his return from injury this week.
I'll be happy to see either Lee or Ekotto at left back, with Gareth Bale ( a must starter) in front. Jenas is probably going to be fit, and maybe Zokora, rather than Huddlestone will be a better midfield choice, if only for his pace and ability to harry and even win midfield challenges. Aaron Lennon is out with an injured knee, so Steed Malbranque or Tainio will take the right side. Berbatov and Keane will of course be up front.
As far as the Liverpool team is concerned, we can say with certainty that Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger will be absent. The fact that Torres played midweek doesnot mean he will be out this Sunday. We may see something of Andrej Voronin, who played against us at Leverkusen last year.
Liverpool have had recent disappointing results in the Champions League and also in their last home league game against Birmingham, so whilst they remain unbeaten in League games, the Reds will be anxious to win, and win convincingly. Who are we to suggest that our reliable Spurs team will surprise them? Not me - 3-1 to Liverpool, and bottom three for another two weeks, which might lead to action by the THFC Board. See you there though!
