Whilst millions (if not over 1 Billion around the world) will be watching the excitement of the last day of this season's Premier League unfold, and fans at seven of the ten games being played will be biting their fingernails to the quick, Spurs and Liverpool meet in one of the three meaningless games of the day.
Spurs fans have been in this state of limbo since being ejected from the UEFA Cup in somewhat unfortunate fashion in March. Whilst Liverpool lost any real chance of league glory several weeks ago, they were of course in the Champions League semi-final, losing to Chelsea. Assured of fourth place and Champions League qualifying status, last week's home game against Man City was Liverpool's only less meaningful match.
These two teams have met on a number of occasions at or near the end of the season. There are two instances of us meeting in the very last league game. On April 28th, 1928, we lost 2-0 at Anfield in what must have been an incredibly tense affair.Going into that game, either team could have been relegated, as Liverpool were below us on 37 points and we had 38. Tom Bromilow and Gordon Hodgson scored the goals that sealed Spurs' fate in front of 31,780. The Spurs team included such legendary names as Arthur Grimsdell, Jimmy Dimmock (scorer of the FA Cup winning goal of 1921), Taffy O'Callaghan and even Cecil Poynton, who was to become the Spurs "magic-sponge man" in later years. Even Sheffield Wednesday in 14th place finished with the same number of points as Liverpool, so there must have been quite a few teams and fans worrying about relegation on that day!
In the 1934-35 season, Spurs were back in the top flight, but were to be relegated again. They did manage a 5-1 win at home to Liverpool in the penultimate game of the season, but with only two wins in their last 20 games, Spurs' fate had been sealed before that match. Only 15,613 watched that win. Spurs scorers were Len Bolan, Doug Hunt and Willie Evans scored a hat-trick. Liverpool had a South African winger Berry Nieuwenhuys, who played and scored their goal.
Spurs and liverpool last met in the very last game of the season at the end of Spurs' first Championship winning season, in May 1951. What an atmosphere that must have been in front of 49,072 fans. A Len Duquemin goal the previous week against Sheffield Wednesday had secured the title, and Spurs were ready for a festival for the last day. Peter Murphy scored twice and Sonny Walters got the third for Spurs in a 3-1 win against a side that included Bob Paisley at half-back.
Spurs fans were much-praised for the respect they showed for Bob Paisley's widow, when she was presented to the crowd at half-time in this season's away game. This match was surely one of the best team performances of the season under Martin Jol. It was another one of those occasions when Spurs held the lead until the dying moments of the game. Voronin had put the home side in the lead, but Robbie Keane replied with a goal either side of half-time to make it 2-1, until Torres scored in added time.
Torres has been a goal-machine for Liverpool this season, with 23 in the league and 32 in all competitions, including three hat-tricks. Voronin (who used to be Dimitar Berbatov's strike partner) has been less successful and less popular following some rather disparaging remarks about the City of Liverpool. Voronin may be on the move in the summer.
Spurs fans must surely be prepared for the departure of Dimitar Berbatov which has been pretty widely telegraphed, not least by his absence from the new kit launch. Berbatov is described as fit to play on Sunday, but whether he will be selected is another question. Maybe Darren bent will get another start beside player of the season Robbie Keane. Paul Robinson and Aaron Lennon are described as doubts for this game.
Robbie Keane is head and shoulders above the rest in the Player of the Season vote and will be presented with his award after the game. Spurs fans will then applaud the squad in the usual end of season parade, but will be watching carefully for signs of who will be leaving in the summer.
I hope for an end of the season festival of football, and of course I hope for a home win to send us all home happy. I actually think that may happen, and will predict 2-1 to Spurs.
