After the demoralising exit from this season's UEFA Cup competition, Spurs have to face up to their remaining Premier league fixtures, with Jaunde Ramos's words clearly ringing in their ears to the effect that he wants them to keep performing right up to the end of the season. There are plenty of points to play for and every place won in the League, means extra money for the coffers of THFC PLC.
As far as these opponents are concerned there are no better places to go in the league, as Spurs have now won 8 consecutive games against Manchester City, whose greatest achievemt of this season might be their league double over Manchester United. Sven Goran Eriksson's men started the season with a marvellous run of home form that kept them in the reckoning for a Champions League place. Now their form has become indifferent to the extent that where they used to rely upon home wins to keep their challenge going, they have failed to win in 6 home games, with their last home success in December, against Bolton. Apart from United, City did beat Newcastle United in January, but then everyone is beating the Toon!
Ciy now know that they really need to make fifth place to even qualify for Europe, and they now sit 11 points off that pace with Everton level on points with Liverpool. Even Villa are seven points behind. Spurs Carling Cup success, coupled with the exit of all Premier League clubs bar Portsmouth from the FA Cup has put a different complexion upon the Premier League run-in.
City are also not helped by the absence through suspension of their best player Martin Petrov, who stupidly got sent off at the end of City's home defeat against Everton. Dietmaar Hamann will also have to miss this one, as he is serving a two match ban, for the number of bookings in the Premier League. Micah Richards is out for another 5 weeks with his knee injury, and Richard Dunne must surely be doubtful after being stretchered off in last week's defeat at Reading. Dunne has become a stalwart for City, and his absence would be as sorely felt as any from his team. The word is though that Dunne may indeed play.
Spurs won the corresponding game last season, thanks to goals by Tom Huddlestone and Calum Davenport. It was Spurs first away win in the Premier League, and we'd had to wait till December. This season, we beat City twice in that month, with Jermain Defoe scoring a vital late winner that kept Spurs away from the bottom three in the league game at The Lane. Then, just before Christmas, Spurs played heroically to win 2-0 in the Carling Cup, despite the early loss of Zokora through a red card. Dimitar Berbatov played a marvellous lone role, but it was Defoe and Malbranque who scored the goals.
This game will be more difficult for Spurs, in the aftermath of such a pyschologically devastating defeat. With Chelsea on the horizon for Spurs, Ramos may choose to rest Berbatov, who worked tremendously for 120 minutes on Wednesday night. Hutton will of course return, but I do not anticipate a wholsesale departure from a strong team, despite some people seeking the blooding of younger members of the squad such as Adel Taarabt.
All runs have to come to an end, and I fear that this will be the game that ends Spurs domination of City over such a long time. I'll predict a 1-1 draw.
Please note that due to my house move, and potential lack of Internet connection, Spurs Odyssey may be offline and unable to report for a considerable time.
