What is "Gilmore's Groin"?
Spurs and Middlesbrough have languished in the wrong half of the Premier League throughout the season. Spurs have held eleventh place since mid-January, whereas "Boro" have flirted with relegation for too much of the season. Mathematically, neither side is yet guaranteed Premier League football next season. Spurs just need one point, but Middlesbrough are 9 points clear of Bolton and eleven away from Fulham. Boro's game next week at home against Bolton will be interesting to say the least.
After their great team performance against Manchester United last week, when January signing Afonso Alves scored two goals to give the home side the lead. Gareth Southgate's team will be imbued with confidence for the remainder of their inconsistent season. Middlesbrough lost 7 of their first 11 games of the season, and of their 8 league wins, it can only be truly said that they pulled the rabbit out of the hat with victory at Portsmouth, and at home against Arsenal. Apart from the United game, the only time they have managed more than one goal in their last 12 league games has been at Liverpool where they lost 3-2 in February.
Middlesbrough have scored in ten of those last twelve games though, and will be ready to give Spurs a test tomorrow. Their proximity to the relegation zone will ensure maximum effort, I am sure.
Former Spur Mido has featured in just 17 games for Boro this season, and is out for 7 weeks with "Gilmore's Groin" (find out what this is by clicking here)- perhaps sustained when he was sent off against Arsenal in March, ten minutes after he came on as a substitute. Mido has scored only two goals for the Riversiders, and that was in August, so the money was good for us, but not well spent by Boro. Another former Spur, Luke Young, has had a more successful season for his new club, playing 30 league games, and even scoring his one goal for the season against us in November. It was another one of those "goals out of the blue" scored against us all too often in the last couple of years.
When Spurs played Boro at home last season, it followed a poor display at The Emirates Stadium, where we succumbed to our greatest enemies with hardly a whimper. This match of course follows the devastating home defeat by Newcastle two weeks ago, and Juande Ramos will surely get a hard-working game out of his team tomorrow. Home supporters should be assured that technically Spurs were better last week at Ewood Park, and they worked hard as well.
This season's away game was Ramos's first league game in charge. Ramos gave Darren Bent his sixth start in that game, and we were rewarded with a 35th minute goal that gave us the lead, only to be surrendered in the second half to that goal by Young.
Apart from Mido, Boro's one major injury doubt could be Robert Huth, who is close to return from a foot injury. Huth is another signing who has not been able to play enough due to injuries, but Boro have felt so confident in David Wheater that they felt able to sell us Jonathan Woodgate - not that I think they could have kept him happily anyway. Woodgate will no doubt get a hot reception from whatever visiting support Middlesbrough can muster.
Spurs are once again likely to be without Paul Robinson, and now Jamie O'Hara is also a doubt. The squad should therefore be no different from last week, and I expect Spurs to make up for the disgrace of our last home game, and send Boro home with their tails between their legs. I'll predict a 3-1 win.
