This season's away game Nani wins it for United
Another transfer window has closed, and despite Juande Ramos's early assertion that Spurs would not be too busy, they have once again been very active in the market.
Jermain Defoe's departure to Portsmouth was regrettable, but in view of the few opportunities he was being given, and his contract situation, his move was somewhat inevitable. It was also inevitable that he would sign for Harry Redknapp who nurtured Defoe at West Ham. Jermain has maintained a great goal-scoring ratio for Tottenham, despite rare League starts over the last couple of seasons, and he has also been the scorer of some cracking goals. Jermain will be assured a great welcome any time he returns to The Lane.
With no replacement signed, one must assume that Darren Bent is back to fitness, and we must also hope that Berbatov and Keane maintain their form and fitness. Sods' law might have something to say about that before the Carling Cup Final. I wonder also whether Adel Taarabt might win further opportunities to cover for Keane in certain games.
Spurs have also signed a Brazilian left back of course - Gilberto da Silva Melo. Gilberto last played for Hertha Berlin in December, and for his country twice in November. It remains to be seen whether Gilberto is introduced for this game.
Pascal Chimbonda was rumoured to have been leaving, but stays (for the moment), so he has to face the competition from Alan Hutton, who has played 90 minutes of all 36 games he has played so far this season for club and country. Hutton has been part of a Rangers defence which has not conceded in its last three games - but of course that was in the SPL!
The departures of Wayne Routledge and Anthony Gardner (the latter on loan to Everton) will not hinder Ramos's squad which has been considerably strengthened - apart from up front. There are so many selection ponderables for tomorrow that once again it is not worth guessing. It would be great to see Jonathan Woodgate get a home debut, and for him to play beside Ledley King, who is back in the England squad so must be fit! Michael Dawson may have to settle for the bench.
United's victory against us in the FA Cup last Sunday, and the England International gives Spurs some respite from their hectic January two-game-a-week schedule. With a trip to Derby to follow next Saturday, we should expect a full strength side to confront Sir Alex Ferguson's men who have beaten us in their last six league visits to White Hart Lane. Spurs' last victory in this fixture was at the end of the 2000-01 season, when United had already won the Premiership.
It will be another great game and a fine battle. Ronaldo is on fire. Scholes made his comeback against us last week. Rooney, Hargreaves, Carrick and Ferdinand and Wes Brown will be keen to impress the watching Fabio Capello, but of course, so will Ledley, Jermaine Jenas, Jonathan Woodgate, Lennon and O'Hara (if selected). Those last two named players are in the under-21 squad, but in Lennon's case his full England status is acknowledged.
Can Spurs beat United for the first time in years? I don't think so, but I am sure they'll have a go. Perhaps we'll manage a draw and I'll predict 2-2.
