Could Spurs be about to swoop for a Pompey defender?
Things have improved for Portsmouth this season! Firstly, away fans at last have the "luxury" of some cover from the elements, as a roof has been erected over the away end. This roof does also cover some of the home fans too! Whether or not they have managed to supplement the solitary portaloo remains to be discovered!
More importantly, especially as far as Pompey fans are concerned, is the progress they have made once again under the guidance of Harry Redknapp, who many love to deride, and who so emotionally claimed his England qualifications after last week's emphatic away win at Villa Park. The Redknapp knockers will be happy that England have apparently opted for a foreign head coach again, whilst Pompey connections will be happy that Harry will stay at their helm.
Harry also spent some time last week moaning about the fact that he will be without so many of his key players in the New Year due to the latest African Nations' Cup. Those players include last week's man of the match Muntari, ex-gooner Kanu, Utaka and former Fulham midfielder Papa Boupa Diop. Those players do not appear to include top scoring Zimbabwean "Benjani" (Benjamin Mwaruwari), who has 8 league goals to his name, and who scored a hat-trick in Pompey's amazing 7-4 win over Reading at the end of September. Benjani scored the home side's goal in the corresponding match last season - equalised by Steed Malbranque in the second half.
Spurs coach Juande Ramos has this week been quoted saying that Spurs will be seeking to buy a "certain player to re-inforce a certain position". Well, Spurs have injuries galore in defence, so that's where they will be seeking re-inforcement and the word is that Matty Taylor could be on that shopping list to fill the three month void of Gareth Bale's absence. Taylor has been spending more of his playing time at left midfield for Pompey Reserves this season, and yet last season, he scored 8 league goals, with more than one being a contender for the BBC's goal of the month competition. However, it's defending prowess that Spurs seek, and I can't imagine a certain centre-half returning to Spurs, can you? He will get a reminder (not that he needs it) of how much he is still hated by Spurs supporters for his traitorous desertion 6 years ago. There might be a lot of water under the bridge, but I don't think there's enough water in the oceans of the world to allow that man ever to be forgiven by those who follow Spurs. Still, I have to tell you that some weird stories have been circulating around one or two of the Spurs message boards this week!
Portsmouth are currently on an incredible run of 11 League games unbeaten, which include no less than 6 consecutive away wins! What Spurs would give for half that achievement in the new few weeks. That Portsmouth run includes 4 home goal-less draws against Liverpool, West Ham, Man City and Everton. That 7-4 result is the only home result with goals in this unbeaten run. The away wins include the 4-1 at Newcastle, so travelling Pompey fans have had a whale of a time.
I have no doubt the goal-less trend will end with this game on Saturday. Spurs only two clean sheets have been at home to Derby and Wigan this season. Their last away clean sheet in the Premiership was at Charlton in May. So, I think we can count on goals! Portsmouth are unlikely to be much different from the team that beat Villa so well last week, wheras perhaps Jermain Defoe did enough with his winner against City to get his second Premier League start of the season, and maybe his second league goal! We will still be missing Robbie Keane through suspension of course.
Since Pompey returned to top flight football, Spurs have a good overall record in these games, but a moderate away record. We drew last season, and won on the opening day of the 04-05 season, but it's a tough proposition this week, with Portsmouth in such good form and full of confidence. This of course is quite the opposite to Spurs' state of mind - although a change has to come sometime.
A score-draw might not be a bad bet, but I fear the first of two league defeats on the trot for Spurs, who travel to The Emirates before Christmas, after next Tuesday's Carling Cup quarter-final at Man City.
