When Wigan arrived in the Premier League in the 2005-06 season, they took us all by surprise and spent the season in the top half, even threatening to qualify for Europe. They finished tenth, but did reach the League Cup Final, knocking out Arsenal in the semi-final along the way to their defeat against Manchester United.
Last season, it was back to reality. Having reached the heights of eighth in the first half of the season, "The Latics" dropped into the relegation zone and only escaped on the last day through a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sheffield United. Both Wigan and Sheffield United were upset at the soft punishment meted out to West Ham over their so-called signings of Argentinean stars Tevez and Mascherano. It was Tevez of course, who gave The Hammers a last day win at Old Trafford.
Since last May, there have been a couple of managerial changes. Paul Jewell took time out, only to re-emerge at Derby where he failed to rescue a club that already looked doomed to immediate return to the Championship. After Chris Hutchings' brief tenure, Steve Bruce upped sticks from Birmingham and returned to the club where he had a brief stay in 2000-01.
When Bruce was appointed in late November, Wigan were coming to the end of a run of 8 consecutive defeats, including our own 4-0 victory at White Hart Lane. The club was in the bottom three and looked destined for the drop. Under Bruce however, Wigan have won 7 of their 9 league wins, which included a 5-3 home win against Blackburn, when Marcus Bent got a hat-trick. Bent has only scored one more goal since, and goals have been a rare commodity for Wigan since that win over Blackburn.
Emile Heskey (who played for Bruce at Birmingham) scored a vital last minute equaliser at Stamford Bridge on Monday night, but the big striker has only scored three league goals all season.
Wigan are unbeaten at home in 5 league games, and whilst they are six points clear of Bolton, they will know they stand more chance of the points in their home games against us, and Reading next week. Wigan's last two fixtures are away to Villa and at home to Manchester United on the last day, although of course by then United may already be crowned Champions.
Wigan's one major injury absentee will be former Spur Erik Edman, who was signed from Rennes in January, and managed just 5 appearances before his cruciate knee injury sustained in the away game against Blackburn.
This season's home game was a 4-0 romp for Spurs. It was Juande Ramos's second league game in charge and only our second league win of the season. Spurs were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to two goals by Jenas and one by Lennon. Substitute Darren Bent added a fourth goal in the 72nd minute.
Last season's away game was an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Wigan taking the lead three times, through Heskey, Baines and KIlbane, whilst Berbatov, and Robbie Keane (twice) ensured that Spurs took a point away. The game was played on the same week-end last year.
We are told that Chimbonda is doubtful with a calf injury, and that Paul Robinson is still a doubt with his ankle. However, I begin to wonder if players with no future at Spurs are now being marginalised by Juande Ramos. Jamie O'Hara is back in training, but if Chimbonda is to miss the game, then I would prefer an orthodox left back to play. That could mean more fun and games with Gilberto!
So, with five games having been played between these two teams, Wigan have yet to taste victory. That could change on Saturday, as their need and desire will be greater than that of Spurs, for whom apathy and inconsistency have been omnipresent since winning the Carling Cup. With that in mind, I'll go against logic and predict a 2-1 win for Spurs.
