Seeking our first league win at The Reebock
When I previewed our league game against Portsmouth two weeks ago, I said that Spurs needed to gain an absolute minimum of 7 points from their next three games. I was hoping that 6 of those would be from home wins, but as we have managed just 4, it leaves me wanting, and Spurs needing a win at The Reebock Stadium tomorrow.
The trouble is that Spurs have yet to manage a league win at The Reebock, with their last league win being at Burnden Park in March 1996. We did win there in the Carling Cup though in October 2004, in an exciting 4-3 extra time win, when Jermain Defoe scored Spurs' first and last goals.
Our home game this season proved to be pivotal for Spurs. Harry Redknapp had been appointed the night before the game, and whilst Clive Allen took charge for the day, Redknapp did have some encouraging input for the Spurs team which had just two points from their first 8 games, and which sat six points behind the "Trotters". Roman Pavlyuchenko scored his first league goal of the season with a header from a Bentley cross, and Darren Bent scored a 76th minute penalty after being fouled by goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Jaaskelainen conceded and saved a penalty on Wednesday night in Bolton's 2-2 draw at Ewood Park. Bolton actually took some support to this game which is after all only just up the road from their base. Their fans were cock-a-hoop when they went 2-0 up thanks to goals by Matty Taylor and Kevin Davies, but by the end of the game, when they were struggling to hold on to a point, manager Gary Megson was the butt of the fans' abuse. Megson has never really won over the Reebock fans since his appointment in October 2007.
Wednesday night's point brought to an end a run of four consecutive defeats, but three of those were against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. Of their 7 wins this season, only three have been at home, against Stoke, Man City, and most recently Portsmouth.
It has now been confirmed that Bolton's club captain Kevin Nolan has joined Newcastle, so the home fans will be even less happy with their lot!
Having splashed the cash for Wilson Palacio, to give the Spurs midfield some much-needed battling quality, Harry Redknapp is presumably going to make a change or two to Tuesday night's winning formation. It is a dilemma for the Spurs manager, who must surely start with the strike combination of Pavlyuchenko and Defoe, who are hitting it off well, with five goals between them in the last 4 games.Stop Press! It now appears that Jermain Defoe has been in jured in training and will not travel to Bolton.(See "The truth about Defoe's injury") The initial rumours suggested he had a broken foot and was out for the rest of the season, whereas the latest from Sky Sports News suggests he will be fit in three weeks. It is a blow of course that Defoe will be missing, but for tomorrow's game, it does give an opportunity to play Modric "in the hole" beind Pavlyuchenko, and for Wilson Palacios to make his debut beside Didier Zokora. Spurs also have a two week break from league football after next week's game against the gooners. Significantly, Spurs have yet to announce team news.
Modric was the master on Tuesday night and has so often been at the core of any Spurs success. Whether Harry switches from 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 as has been mooted remains to be seen. Maybe our new boys will have to stay on the bench? Personally, I would favour starting with Tuesday's winning team, hoping for a bright start and a goal or two, when Palacios could be introduced to help shore things up at the back.
A win for either team would ease the pressure of the relegation fight, and lift them a potential 6 points clear of the bottom three. As a result, I think both teams will be going for it, and if Spurs can get the sort of start they did against Stoke, they should go on and win it. Bolton ought to find the Spurs defence much more resilient than they did Blackburn, and I'll take Spurs to win 2-0.
