Spurs and Bolton last played this fixture exactly 6 months ago. With three Premier League matches remaining, Spurs were safe in 11th place, whilst Bolton were still embroiled in the relegation battle in 16th, where they start this game. In the current situation, most Spurs fans would give everything to be safe in 11th place.

The chips will be down then for a relegation 6-pointer. If Bolton win they will be 9 points clear of us, and probably 4 points clear of the bottom three. if they lose of course, they will be dragged down into the battle which is really only beginning. Even a win for Spurs will not be enough to take us off the bottom, but it will keep us in touch. Mind you, with games at Arsenal and at home to Liverpool next week, there is little or no hope of us kick starting the season this month.

Jimmy Greaves likes to hark back to his early days in football, as a diminutive Chelsea striker, when he used to be faced with bruising defenders from northern teams such as Bolton. The line Greaves quoted was something like "'Ee Tom, I'll kick him to you, and when you've finished with 'im, kick him back to me".

Why have I mentioned this, you might ask. Well, it is a tale of typical English grit. This is an element brutally lacking in the Spurs make-up at the moment in the engine room of midfield. Such a deficiency might be compensated for if there was an artist at the back of midfield such as Christian Poulsen, who starred for Ramos's Sevilla when our coach was busy winning the UEFA Cup twice, and seriously challenging for La Liga. Spurs have no such artist in their squad.

Ramos, or whoever has to pick up the reins should he get sacked in the near future, will have to work with the material in the Spurs squad until January, although there are players in the squad clearly being dismissed by Ramos, who has not yet awarded them a squad number. Could there yet be a case for renegade Hossam Ghaly, or even Kevin Prince Boateng to bring some fire to the Spurs belly?

Another of Spurs many problems is the lack of support for Darren Bent, or whoever is given the role in Ramos's favoured 4-5-1. It is either time to play two up front, or to commit someone like Giovani, Lennon, or even Taarabt to play off the striker. Taarabt keeps possession too long, I know, but he CAN be disciplined to pass, and he does consistently carry the ball past opponents in the middle. Taarabt has the ability to really rattle his opponents too! Ricardo Rocha can still do a job at the back too.

With Bale and Dawson suspended tomorrow, and Ledley bound to be resting, I imagine the back four will be Hutton, Corluka, Woodgate and Ekotto. Modric and Lennon were two of our better players on Thursday night and ought to start. The regular permutation of Jenas and Zokora in the middle might not be enough to oppose Nolan, McCann and Muamba in the Bolton midfield. However, Jenas will be Captain of course, whereas Jonathan Woodgate has this week clearly demonstrated the quality to be the desired team leader.

Any game for Spurs is tough at the moment, and Bolton come back to London on the back of a good 3-1 win at Upton Park three weeks ago. The "Trotters" only other win was on Day One against our victors of last week - Stoke.

So, what we need tomorrow is some typical English footballing grit from our players, massive support from the fans, and three points. if that happens, I will remain hopeful that we can yet survive the season in the top flight. Any other result, and I am afraid I shall be convinced that we are going down. I dare not even predict a win for Spurs.

Whatever happens, I would like to propose the toast of my company in Italy this week - "Here's to better times!"
