Another chance for Bentley to shine as Wembley beckons

Spurs' second half come-back against Burnley in the first leg of this tie was inspired by Jamie O'Hara, who replaced David Bentley at half-time. Bentley got his chance to redeem himself when he replaced Gareth Bale in Sunday's league game against Portsmouth, when, despite playing down his less fancied left side, he did manage to threaten goal with a free kick, and he also managed a spot-on delivery for Darren Bent's chance of a winning goal. Bentley may get a chance to redeem himself further with a start against a side whose fans bear him malice because of his former association with their "team up the road" - Blackburn. Perhaps Bentley can score a goal as wondrous as he did at our local rivals earlier in the season. (Another of his former clubs of course!).

We already know that Ben Alnwick will make his first team debut tomorrow night, as Heurelho Gomes finally is allowed to rest his injury. With a three goal cushion, former England Under-21 International Alnwick should be okay, although he does not have the size and physique normally associated with a keeper. Mind you, Shay Given does alright at Newcastle, doesn't he?

Benoit Assou-Ekotto has served his four match suspension at last, and will probably get a run out in a back four that will still be strong with Gunter coming in for Corluka, and Dawson and Woodgate present to try and ensure our three goal lead is not reduced.

Ledley, Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Jenas are all set to miss this one, but that still leaves plenty of strength and experience for the midfield and attack. I think that Modric deserves a rest, and a starting line-up of Alnwick; Gunter, Dawson, Woodgate, Ekotto; Bentley, Huddlestone, Zokora, O'Hara; and any two strikers is on the cards. Jermain Defoe is eligible, but tomorrow night's game will be about preventing an early home goal, and keeping the three goal margin, rather than increasing the difference, I think.

Man Utd beat Derby 4-3(on aggregate), so we know who our opponents will be at Wembley, as long as we don't make a real hash of a visit to Turf Moor, where the home side have nothing to lose, and every reason to attack with relish, seek an early goal, and perhaps cause a shock.

One guest of honour at tomorrow night's game will be Ralph Coates, who as a former Burnley and Spurs player will be presented at half-time at Turf Moor, as he was in the first leg at White Hart Lane. Although his league career started at Burnley in 1963, Ralph, who was born in the Tyne and Wear area at Hetton-Le-Hole in 1946, first played competitive football for non-league Eppleton Colliery Welfare. Coates spent 6 happy years at Turf Moor, playing in 206 league games and scoring 26 goals in the process. Ralph was signed by Bill Nicholson in January 1971, and played in 229 spurs games, including most famously the 1973 League Cup Final, when he came off the bench to score one of his 24 goals in our colours to secure the trophy that year for the second time for Spurs. Coates' career ended in humble circumstances for local sides in Hertfordshire, where he still lives. Ralph has both Burnley and Tottenham in his heart and will repeat his wish for Spurs to get to Wembley, and for Burnley to win promotion.

Other players for both clubs include Paul Gascoigne, the late Mark Kendall, Paul McVeigh, Paul Stewart, Mitchell Thomas, Chris Waddle, and our current goal-keeping coach, UEFA Cup Final hero Tony Parks. Parks was on Burnley's books late in his career in 1997 and 1998, and made a couple of league cup appearances for the lancashire side.

Spurs of course are hot favourites to go on to Wembley, and quite honestly, if they fail in that task it would be nothing short of a disgrace. There might be one or two early scares, but I'll take Spurs to win by the odd goal in three. See you at Wembley!
