Battle of the 1-0 Champions!
The home defeat by Everton on November 30th is the one and only home defeat in 20 home games since the appointment of Harry Redknapp on the morning of the first of those games (October 26th). This Everton win was achieved after referee Steve Bennett un-characteristically allowed Arteta to slide a quick free kick to Pienaar, who had a free shot on goal, with which he did not fail. Mr. Bennett had insisted on every other occasion throughout that game that free kicks should be taken on his command. Spurs were missing Jenas and Modric in midfield that day, and of course we were still struggling to come to terms with our weakened strike force - an item that was rectified in January.
The time was when Everton just could NOT beat Tottenham, and they were one of our favourite Premier League opponents. Things have changed in the last three seasons though, as the "Toffees" have beaten us in their last three visits to White Hart Lane. On the other hand, Spurs have not lost at Goodison Park for five years, since a televised Good Friday night 3-1 defeat, in which Stephen Carr got sent off for Spurs, after scoring a consolation goal for Spurs. It was Carr's last goal and one of his last games in our colours. It is interesting to reflect how both teams have changed in those five years, although both the Spurs strikers (Keane and Defoe) could play tomorrow.
Last year's corresponding game ended 0-0, and was really only memorable for an immaculate Spurs debut by Jonathan Woodgate, who within a month would be come a Spurs hero with his brave winning goal at Wembley against Chelsea.
Everton will be facing Chelsea of course at Wembley at the end of the month in this year's FA Cup Final, and having already guaranteed their place in the Europa Cup might be expected to relax a little on their run-up to the Cup Final. Everton last won the FA Cup in 1995, having despatched us (Klinsmann and all) in what was a miserable day for Spurs fans at Elland Road. That's enough about that one then!
The two teams could be battling it out for the "1-0 Champions of the season" title. Whenever Everton have had success under David Moyes, they've had the reputation of being a boring team that has ground out 1-0 victories. Well this season, in all competitions, both teams have won 6 games by that score-line, and it is Spurs who have been doing it more frequently lately, so perhaps we should keep quiet about that statistic!
Everton have suffered some of the worst injury problems of any team, so it is to their credit that they have maintained their high league position and made the FA Cup Final. Having said that, this year's final is probably one I shall avoid, what with hating Chelsea and all. David Moyes has to manage without key players such as Jagielka, Arteta, Anichebe, and Yakubu beyond the end of the season. However, Pienaar has been in good form of late, scoring one of the goals at The Stadium of Light last week, and at Villa Park in an exciting 3-3 draw.
Tim Cahill continues to be a thorn in any opponent's side though, and Everton have a candidate for "signing of the season" in Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who played for Standard Liege against Liverpool in their Champions League qualifiers, but was then signed by Moyes, playing again in the losing side against Liverpool in his fourth game for Everton. Fellaini and Palacios can battle it out for most yellow cards of the season, as Fellaini has 15 in all games this season, whilst Wilson has 17! Both players are obviously very committed individuals, and Fellaini probably has more creative and goal-scoring skills that the great Wilson. Fellaini has 10 goals to his name for club and country this season. Another battle he can have tomorroww is the battle of the hair-do, with Benoit Assou-Ekotto!
Spurs have no new injury problems, so just Bent and Dawson will be absent. Stop Press! Aaron Lennon (groin) and Benoit Assou-Ekotto (foot) are out. Bentley and Zokora are doubtful. Taarabt and Giovani (back from loans) are also not available. Robbie Keane has lost some form in recent games, and was graded lowest of the Spurs team by those who voted after last week's game against West Brom. However, Harry Redknapp is unlikely to withdraw Keane from the role of linking between a strong midfield and lone striker. The question is whether that striker will be Defoe or Pavlyuchenko.
As we have seen, there are various battles to be won. The biggest battle could be one of desire, and if Spurs are truly up for that seventh place qualification, then they are the ones that should win this game to keep themselves in the hunt for Europe. I'll take them to win - 1-0!
