Whilst Spurs can claim to have their best Premier League playing record against fellow Premier League ever-presents Everton, they have lost the last two corresponding fixtures. Both have been played early in the season, and last year's game was the first at home. Whilst last year's game was being played (featuring only five players who could possibly take part for Spurs tomorrow), the executive was probably plotting the downfall of Martin Jol, as they were caught chatting up Juande Ramos in Seville later that week in August 2007.
Both teams are in the current top six on form based on the last six games. Everton stumbled last week at Wigan, and in the current league table, where Wigan climbed 6 places on the back of their win today, the "Toffees" fell three places without playing. They will be keen to keep their winning run going at Spurs, and to recoup their position on the periphery of the top five.
Everton had an indifferent start to the season, with home defeats to Blackburn and Portsmouth, in which three goals were conceded each time. During that spell, they also were defeated by a good team - Standard Liege - in the first round of the UEFA Cup. Everton also lost chalks by losing 2-0 at home to Liverpool, at which stage they were only just outside the relegation zone.
Spurs are still too close to the bottom of course, and a win would gain them a maximum of three places.
Everton's return to form seems to have co-incided with a return to their defensive ways, where they have scored more than one goal only once in their last seven games, in their 3-1 win at Upton Park. Yakubu, Saha, Osman and recent signing Marouane Fellaini have all been chipping in with goals. Fellaini was signed from Standard Liege, and has scored 4 goals for club and country so far this season. Fellaini and Arteta will be dangers in the middle then, and their Spurs opponents must be stronger in the challenge, I feel.
Jonathan Woodgate made an impressive Spurs debut at Goodison Park in January, and will be needed next to skipper Ledley King tomorrow. Corluka will return at right back, and Ekotto is likely to complete the back four. I'd go for Lennon and Bale on the wings myself, but what do I know? Jermaine Jenas should be fit, and as Huddlestone is flavour of the month, he will probably get the nod from Harry Redknapp. Pavlyuchenko should be okay to return next to Bent.
It is turning into a great season for the non partisan followers of Premier League football, in which so many games have been "six-pointers". Despite Spurs' return to form and consistency under Redknapp, it is not yet possible to be too confident, but a win tomorrow would set us up for a run to the top half of the table and perhaps beyond. The first goal will be so vital, as both teams are currently defending well. I'll go for a dynamic 3-1 Spurs win!
