Let the harvest (not heart-ache) begin.
When Hull beat Spurs at The Lane on 5th October, it was their fourth win in their phenomenal start to their Premier League career. They had won 4 of their first 7 games, and stood third in the league behind only Chelsea and Liverpool (by three points). Hull won their next two games too, but have since endured a miserable run of 16 league games in which they won only one game - at home to Middlesbrough.
Hull's one defeat before beating Spurs was by 5-0 at home to Wigan. They have since conceded five again at Manchester City, four at Old Trafford, and four at home to Sunderland.
When Hull beat Spurs at The Lane on 5th October, it led to the "Titanic" headlines, referring to Spurs' previous worst start to a league season. Spurs were rock bottom, without a win, and less than three weeks away from sacking Juande Ramos.
Almost every league game since then has been "crucial" for Spurs, and the Harry Redknapp honeymoon period was over by Christmas when we failed to gather the expected harvest of points to continue what had been a period of recovery.
January and February has, as usual, been interspersed by Cup games, and the rhythym of the league season suffers. Now we have three more crucial league games from which the harvest MUST be fruitful, starting with this one at The KC Stadium. Then, after the Carling Cup Final, it is Middlesbrough at home, followed by Sunderland away. On present form, two wins in those games is going to be difficult for Spurs to achieve, but that is the minimum I would be looking for. The right results in those next three league games could be enough to allow us to forget about relegation. However, knowing Spurs that won't happen, and we'll have no nails to bite for a month or two yet.
I personally agree with the decision to prioritise the League, as opposed to the UEFA Cup, which would require a minimum of 8 more games to achieve glory in a competition which features plenty of formidable sides. I also think we will have a chance at Wembley next Sunday.
Tomorrow's Spurs side will only faintly resemble that which lost in Donetsk, with Cudicini, Corluka, Woodgate, Ekotto, Bale, Palacios, Lennon, Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane all entering the fray.
Former Spur Anthony Gardner may feature for Hull, having made a come back in their FA Cup tie at Bramall Lane last Saturday. Gardner had only previously played three games for his new club, and in a ten year career has only made a total of 158 league games. Gardner's best turn-out for a season was 33 games for Spurs in the 2003-04 season. Another former Spur, Dean Marney, will be making his 100th league appearance for Hull, if selected. Jimmy Bullard was signed from Fulham for a sizeable fee and a generous contract in January, but is already out for the season with more knee trouble. Danny Cousin is likely to return for Hull, with his strike colleague Craig Fagan now out for at least 6 weeks with a knee injury.
Harry Redknapp has sufficient tools at his disposal to come away from Hull with all three points. However, Spurs will be faced with a team that was resilient enough to stop Chelsea scoring at Stamford Bridge in their last league game, and the majority of a 25,000 crowd which will be baying for their first league win since early December.
I do not feel confident enough to predict a win, and will opt for a 1-1 draw, which will leave us in nail-biting mode for another 9 days before we entertain Middlesbrough.
