Spurs have only ever met Hull City in the former Football League Division Two, and there have been just 14 matches. The two teams last met in Spurs' one season in Division Two in the last 58 years. At the end of that season, we were promoted, and Hull finished bottom. The last competitive meeting of the two clubs was in January 1981 in the 4th round of the FA Cup.
This of course was a winning year for Spurs. The game was played at The Lane on 24th January, and goals from Steve Archbald and substitute Garry Brooke gave us a 2-0 win. The teams that day were Spurs:- Daines; McAllister, Miller, Roberts, Yorath, Perryman, Ardiles (sub Brooke), Archibald, Galvin, Hoddle; Hull:- Norman; Hoolickin, McNeil, Richards, Booth, Roberts, Marwood, McClaren, Edwards, Norrie, Deacy.
Hull were a Division Four side in those days. Former England manager Steve McClaren was then a 20 year old Hull midfielder, and current day Sky commentator Brian Marwood was in the early stages of his career, which later included time at Arsenal.
Another former gooner - Terry Neill - was the Hull City manager between 1970 and 1974, when he was appointed as Bill Nicholson's successor at White Hart Lane. Neill presided over two seasons at Spurs, who only just avoided relegation in his first year. Mind you, there were two sensational results at the end of that season when we beat Chelsea 2-0 and Leeds 4-2. Those were the days of Alfie Conn sitting on the ball in the centre circle; Romark the hypnotist; and "Nice One Cyril".
Those who have played for both sides include present day players Fraizer Campbell, Anthony Gardner, Nick Barmby and Dean Marney. Hull were keen to sign Campbell after his great (15 goal) contribution to their promotion last year, but Spurs snatched that deal from under their noses in the Berbatov transaction. Anthony Gardner was initially signed as a loan player, but subsequently signed permanently. He has played just three league games to date and has been missing with a thigh strain. Gardner is not expected to be fit for this game, but who knows?
Barmby hasn't played since the 5-0 home drubbing by Wigan, but Dean Marney took part in last week's historic defeat of Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium. Former Man City player Geovanni scored that spectacular goal, and coach Phil Brown has led Hull to a dream of a start to their Premier League career. Who would have thought that when we played them, we would be holding up the table and they would be in the top half?
No doubt Michael Dawson will be hoping to play against his brother Andy, but of course at opposite ends of the pitch they may not get too close, if selected. Andy is five years older and also started his career at Nottingham Forest, having since played at Scunthorpe before moving to Hull in 2003.
We can also expect to see former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough midfielder George Boateng, and striker Marlon King on Sunday.
Because I am travelling to Poland until late on Saturday, this preview had to be prepared before Thursday's game. Whatever the result, Premier League points are more crucial than they have ever been to Spurs, and two consecutive wins over Hull, then Stoke must be achieved. It will be our visitors though who will feel confident, fancy their chances of a result, and who will test the nerve of players and fans alike.
The Spurs crowd will be a strong force on Sunday, and I just have to predict a home win. However, it could be very close and I'll go for a 2-1
