Cast your mind forward
Cast your mind back to 7th October 2007, when Spurs last played at Anfield. Martin Jol was still in charge, and Spurs started in the bottom three with 6 (not 2!) points from 8 games. Liverpool were fourth with 15 points from their first 7 games of the season. Spurs had beaten only Derby in the Premier League and were not expected to come away from Anfield with anything in their pocket. Contrary to expectations, they got a well deserved point, and Robbie Keane scored both our goals either side of half-time. Only a late, late equaliser by Torres saved Liverpool's blushes.
Cast your mind back to the beginning of this season, which started 9 and a half months ago. Robbie Keane had already left for his "boyhood idols", and Berbatov was on the brink of leaving. Despite the decimated strike force, some people (me included) held optimistic thoughts about signings such as Bentley and Giovani, which were soon to be wiped away by poor performances by Bentley and the absence of Giovani from the Spurs set-up for much of the time. I suspect both will be going elsewhere this summer.
We all know how many points Spurs had after 8 games this season!
Cast your mind back to 1st November this season, when bottom of the table Spurs hosted league leaders Liverpool in a game where again form dictated that Spurs would get no return. The game however followed the miraculous events at The Emirates, where Spurs came back at the death from 4-2 down to gain a point and as the Star Wars film title said "A New Hope". Kuyt gave Liverpool an early lead and at half-time Harry Redknapp replaced Jamie O'Hara with Roman Pavlyuchenko, apparently telling him in his inimitable style to "f***ing run about a bit". Redknapp and the fans were rewarded with a Carragher own goal and a last minute winner by Pavlyuchenko!
For good measure, Spurs repeated the trick less than two weeks later with a Carling Cup win over a different Liverpool side. Spurs were the only team to beat Liverpool in the league until late February, when of all teams, Middlesbrough also achieved the feat. Liverpool must rue those lost six points now!
Cast your mind back to January, when Liverpool topped the Premier League and Spurs were back in the bottom three after a dismal result at Wigan. Robbie Keane had been marginalised by Rafa Benitez, and was re-signed by Tottenham on the last day of the transfer window (actually early February). On that day I predicted that Keane would score the winner at Anfield to save us from relegation. Well, that situation did not arrive thankfully and in my view, despite his recent form, Robbie had everything to do with Spurs rise up the table.
Cast your mind forward to 6 o'clock tomorrow. There will be tears for two teams in the north-east, and whether or not Spurs do achieve a somewhat miraculous win over a Liverpool side that will be determined to go out on a high, we can smile about our end to the season. I think that Fulham will get at least a point off Everton and that this result will be irrelevant to that remaining Europa Cup place. I also suspect that Liverpool will win anyway.
Cast your mind forward to next season. Harry Redknapp will strengthen the squad in key areas and Spurs will surely go into the next term with realistic chances of a high league placing, and none of the trauma we had to endure this season. I'm looking forward to it already!
Team News
Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Jonathan Woodgate are doubts for this game. Ekotto will undergo an assessment on a swollen knee, while Woodgate is still struggling with the groin problem that forced him off in last weekend's victory over Manchester City.
Tom Huddlestone is recovering well after his knee operation earlier this week, but remains out along with Michael Dawson (ankle), Aaron Lennon (groin), Jamie O'Hara and Adel Taarabt (both knee).
On a brighter note, Darren Bent has returned to training following the knee injury he picked up in last month's defeat at Manchester United.
