One of our favourite opponents!
Our away fixture this season against City was our 12th match of the season, and the fifth of Harry Redknapp's reign (if one includes the Bolton game for which he over-saw Clive Allen). Spurs went into the game in bottom position, but their first away league win took them up to 16th, one point behind City, who had also had a disappointing start to this season which saw the bottom 12 clubs looking over their shoulders for so long.
At that time, Hull, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth were in the top half, but now they all still face the threat of relegation - Portsmouth only marginally.
If City had been in the Premier League every season of its existence, perhaps they would officially be our favourite team to play, as we have gained 52 points in our 23 Premier League games. Everton are probably the only team we have a better record against, as we have gained 63 points from 34 league games.
Now both teams go into Saturday's penultimate Premier League game, still chasing that seventh place in the table, hoping that Newcastle can beat Fulham in their quest for survival. Whichever team wins this one will still be in the race on the final day of the season, but in Spurs' case they have to travel to Anfield. We probably need to hope that Man Utd secure the title this week-end and that Liverpool will be secure in the runners-up slot before we meet at Anfield.
Fulham must still be favourites with that Newcastle game, then a final match at home to Cup Finalists Everton, whilst West Ham travel to Everton tomorrow and have Middlesbrough at home on the final day. Man City's final game is at home to Bolton, but of course, if Spurs win tomorrow City can forget about another season in Europe, where they stayed in the UEFA Cup longer than any other British club this season.
Surely all the money in the world is not going to attract the calibre of player that newly rich City seek to bring to Eastlands, whilst they don't attain European football?
The word is that Robinho will not be available for this match, due to a groin injury, but his application in a poor away season for City has been questionable anyway. (Robinho has scored three of his twelve goals for City away from home) City have won just twice on their travels. Early in the season, they beat Sunderland 3-0 (after the Mackems had beaten us at The Lane), and the other week, they got a win at Goodison Park, the week after Everton had won their semi-final, and also after Everton had a 0-0 at Stamford Bridge. Apart from the Robinho news, there is no other major injury absentee for City, which means that Shaun Wright-Phillips will be available to play and to receive ritual abuse from the Spurs fans for his parentage.
From what I can gather, Aaron Lennon and Benoit Assou-Ekotto ought to be available again, and I therefore hope to see the usual 4-4-2 with Lennon whizzing down the wing. Who we get up front is of course down to the manager, but speed could be the downfall of the City defence, so I hope to see Spurs maintain their winning record against City (8 in our last 9 league games), and maybe maintain that clean sheet and low goals-against record at The Lane. Just for a change, I'll predict a 2-0.
Latest team news from THFC:- - Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Didier Zokora are both fit again after injury to face Manchester City on Saturday.
However, Aaron Lennon (groin), Darren Bent (knee), and Michael Dawson (ankle) remain sidelined. Giovani Dos Santos, meanwhile, will sit out due to illness.
Jamie O'Hara and Adel Taarabt have both undergone knee operations and will not feature again this season.
And Wilson Palacios is currently back home in Honduras with his family due to personal reasons.
Note that the Spurs Odyssey match report may be delayed due to social commitments this week-end
