Upon my command - release hell (well Hudd at least!)
Newcastle United (under the command of Kevin Keegan) arrived in the Premier Leaguein 1993, one year after the party had begun. Keegan led them to the runners-up position in the 95-96 and 96-97 seasons giving them Champions League football in 1997. Another legend, Sir Bobby Robson led "The Toon" to top five finishes between 2002 and 2004 and gave United two more years in the Elite European League. After 16 years in the domestic top flight, Newcastle have to face their biggest risk of relegation yet.
Alan Shearer has timed his arrival well. It's a no lose situation for him. With 8 games left at the time of his appointment, relegation would not be his fault, whereas survival would ensure that they would need to build his statue twice as high as The Angel of the North to reflect his esteemed status on Tyneside.
Shearer was given little time to work before Newcastle faced Chelsea, and lost 2-0. Last week they travelled to Stoke where they were 1-0 down till minutes before the end when 20 year old Andy Carroll was the partial saviour of The Toon. In truth that was a must-win game for Newcastle, and at this stage, every game has that status for them.
Having faced Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea in their last three home games, at least Shearer will fancy his chances more with most of their remaining games, although they do still have to travel to Liverpool and to Villa Park on the last day.
The fact is that despite their frailties, Newcastle will fancy their chances at White Hart Lane, as they have won the last 6 league games between the two sides. The last time Spurs won a league game was on New Year's Eve 2005. On that occasion, Shearer was Captain of the visitors, and Spurs' two goals were scored by players who have since also played in the North-East - Teemu Tainio, and Mido.
This season's league visit to Tyneside ended with the agony of a late goal by Damien Duff to give the home side all three points. Last season's game at The Lane was an embarrassment to the Carling Cup holders at the time. Kevin Keegan was again the manager of The Toon (only for a short spell this time!), and despite Darren Bent giving Spurs a 25th minute lead, Butt got an equaliser just before the break, before we fell victim to three more goals in the second half.
Newcastle do top one league at the moment, and that is in the Injury league. They have Martins, Enrique, Lovenkrands, steven Taylor, Viduka, Joey Barton, Kadar and Gonzalez all on the injury list, although there may be some hope of Enrique, Taylor and Viduka taking part. Michael Owen hasn't scored since mid-January, but he does have a habit of cropping up at any time of course. In nearly four years since arriving at St. James' Park, Owen has managed 66 league games, but still has a good strike rate with 26 goals.
All the tension will be on the Toon side this week, whilst Spurs can now relax about the Premier League status, whilst still seeking that European spot for seventh place. Jermain Defoe has returned to full training, but the thought is that he will start on the bench this week, perhaps with Darren Bent for company whilst Pavlyuchenko continues up front. Jermaine Jenas might have to sit this one out with a hamstring, but Palacios is back which would enable Spurs the licence to play Tom Huddlestone as his attacking foil.
So, I say to Harry Redknapp - "Upon my command release hell", in the shape of Tom Huddlestone to hammer another nail in the demise of Newcastle United. I'll take Spurs to win 2-0.
