Udinese Calcio (to quote their full name) were founded in 1896, but were a yo-yo club until the 1995-96 season, since when they have established themselves in the top flight of Italian football. Their achievement is such that they narrowly missed qualification for the Champions League at the end of last season, and had to settle for the UEFA Cup through their league position (7th).
Situated in the north-east of Italy, close to the border with Slovenia, Udinese have little in the way of honours to their name. However, they will clearly provide formidable opposition tomorrow, as they are in second place in Serie A after 7 league games, only two points behind Inter.
Udinese beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in Germany in the first round, but lost by a similar scoreline at home, winning the tie 4-3 on penalties. The fact that Spurs beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in the pre-season cannot be used as any form of measure of form, as our league season has cast the pre-season into irrelevant obscurity.
25 year old Fabio Quagliarella can play anywhere across the front line, and has been suggested in the past as a possible Spurs target, although this has never been substantiated. Quagliarella is an obvious danger, having scored 3 league goals so far. Swiss International Inler Gokhan has also scored a couple of times, as did club captain 31 year old Italian International Antonio Di Natale. Di Natale featured in both Italy's recent games against Bulgaria and Montenegro. Floro Flores is not usually first choice up front, but he too has scored twice so far this term.
The only link I can think of between the two clubs is that Rodrigo Defendi spent some time there on loan in the 2005-6 season. Defendi was one of Frank Arnesen's signings, who never made it to the Spurs first team. he is now playing regularly for Avellino in the Italian Second Division.
In view of Spurs' precarious league status, the UEFA Campaign seems an irrelevance really, but the club will be grateful for the income. The match can be seen in the UK on Channel Five from 6 p.m.
Those of us travelling will be there for the crack of course; a bit of genuine Italian food (and beer!); and the hope of seeing a decent result. In the circumstances, a draw would be more than satisfactory, and probably the objective of the management team.
The Spurs Odyssey report will not be posted before Friday night.
