I'm desperate for a win!
Spurs last played West Bromwich Albion in the 2005-06 season, which ended for us in the despair of "Lasagnegate" at Upton Park, and for the "Baggies" relegation, which they had so narrowly avoided in the 2004-05 season. Then it was Bryan Robson who achieved the miracle of survival for a team that had been bottom at Christmas, which until then meant that relegation was inevitable.
Now West Brom have Tony Mowbray at the helm to try and guide them to safety from anchor position. Having beaten Man City last week, their task is not so impossible as it was perceived 4 seasons ago. After all, West Brom are only 5 points below us, and a win tomorrow would reduce that gap significantly. Any Spurs fan who thinks this will be an easy three points should think again, but I suspect most Spurs fan are more realistic than that, and realise that despite the Harry Redknapp revival, we are still in the relegation mix and desperately need the win, and more points in January to drag ourselves up the table.
I personally am bitterly fed up with looking up the table, and crave some mid-table mediocrity for a start!
In the two games we played in 2005-06, we beat West Brom (also known as "The Throstles") 2-1 at White Hart Lane, thanks to two goals from Robbie Keane, who as an ex-Wolves player did have a habit of scoring against this Black Country team, whose fans love to hate any ex-Wolves player. Maybe even Tom Huddlestone (if fit) would get stick for the short period he spent at Molineaux on loan in that 2005-06 season, soon after he was signed by Spurs from Derby. Huddlestone must be a severe doubt though, after twisting his ankle in yesterday's game against Fulham.
The last away game we played at The Hawthorns was also played on December 28th (2005). That ended in a miserable 2-0 defeat, and was one of our worst performances of the season outside the embarrassing Cup defeats in both domestic cup competitions at the first hurdle that season.
The personnel of both teams have changed radically since then, but West Brom still have 30 year old Paul Robinson at the back and former Manchester United prodigy Jonathan Greening in midfield. The "Baggies" have former Bolton centre-back Abdoulaye Meite in defence, and Scott Carson in goal. Meite will miss this game though, due to suffering a hamstring at Chelsea yesterday. Tony Mowbray caused a little controversy by leaving out his two main strikers for the Chelsea game, but no doubt Bednar and former Villa striker Luke Moore will feature against us.
That win against Man City was West Brom's only win in 12 games. Their other three successes came in their first 7 games against West Ham, Middlesbrough and Fulham.
It has been a rare event this season for Spurs to play a side below them in the League. Anticipated team changes must include Jonathan Woodgate for Ledley King, and Jenas for Huddlestone, but I would hope that a place can be found for Jamie O'Hara, who can battle harder than David Bentley in the middle, and to be honest can deliver a more lethal dead ball on current form. Pavlyuchenko is surely more likely to start than Darren Bent.
I am desperate for a win, but so are both teams. Spurs have at least maintained a discipline and composure in their football recently, without getting the results they need. However, a bit more spark will be required to get what we want tomorrow. I think we'll just do it too!
