Beware the Baggies!
West Brom's 3-0 win over fellow relegation strugglers Sunderland last week was only their seventh win of the season (Spurs have now won 12 league games), and their first for three months since they beat Middlesbrough in January.
West Brom have been holding up the Premier League table since November, when they had 11 points from 12 games. Yet a month before that, they were in 9th place after 7 games. Four of the teams who were in the top ten of that week are now involved in the end of season relegation battle (Hull, Portsmouth and Blackburn are the others).
Spurs' Christmas visit to The Hawthorns was another inauspicious occasion, when a 2-0 defeat left me in fear of a prolonged relegation struggle for Spurs. Spurs have definitely under- performed in their few Premier League meetings with "The Baggies".
Apart from the potential loss of prestige and financial implications of relegation, perhaps one of the big incentives for West Brom to stay up (and we should not write them off just yet) is the fact that their Black Country rivals - Wolves - have already won automatic promotion, and that if only West Brom could survive, they would face Wolves in the top flight next season. This has not happened in 25 years, although of course the two teams have met plenty of times in the second tier of football over that period. Both teams have also faced a spell in the third tier. It is ironic how the two rivals have missed each other over the years due to being in different divisions. Mind you, West Midlands Police will be mightily relieved!
Tony Mowbray's charges remain odds on favourites for the drop, but they won't be giving up just yet, and will fancy their chances against a team they have already beaten this term. Their other remaining fixtures are at home to Wigan and Liverpool and a last day trip to Blackburn. Saturday's game is a must win for our opponents.
Midfielder Chris Brunt will be the main danger on the West Brom side. He is their top scorer with 8 league goals and is in top form, with 4 of those goals in the last three games, in which West Brom have scored 7 goals, but have gained just 4 points.
As for Spurs, we have learnt today that Darren Bent has suffered damage to a medial knee ligament, and that his injury will only be fully assessed after a scan in two weeks time. That looks like a case of "out for the season" to me. We must hope that one or both Defoe and Pavlyuchenko will be available for Saturday's game. That leaves the perennial question of Ledley King's fitness, but if he didn't make it, Corluka could partner Woodgate and Alan Hutton can race up and down the right flank behind Aaron Lennon.
Spurs and their fans will surely want to strike back after last week's collapse at Old Trafford. I fancy that Saturday's game will see a goal fest, and that Spurs will be convincing winners. I'll go for a 3-0, thus preserving the chance to continue the home clean sheet record.
Did you know? West Brom manager Tony Mowbray was born on the day of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on 22nd November 1963.
