Martin Chivers was born to score goals. In his heyday with Tottenham Hotspur and England in the late sixties and early seventies he was considered by many to be the finest striker in Europe. This is his story.
In Big Chiv (the affectionate nickname he earnt from the Spurs fans who idolised him), Chivers tells the story of a life driven by his abiding passion, the need to score goals - for Southampton as a teenage striking sensation, then for Spurs, and England and later for Servette in Switzerland, Norwich, Brighton and Haugesund in Norway.
It is a candid and revealing insight into the life of a footballer in a golden era of the game, and inside the mind of one of football’s great strikers. More than that, it is a fascinating journey back in time that re-opens the dressing room door on the great Spurs team of the 1970s, the wonderful characters and their exploits on and off the pitch.
A key theme of the Big Chiv is a fascinating examination of Chivers’s turbulent relationship with legendary Tottenham manager Bill Nicholson.
Immensely powerful yet somehow graceful at he same time with immaculate touch and control, Martin Chivers was a magnificent footballer and this – his long-awaited autobiography – is a book to match.
About the author: Martin Chivers is the only Southampton-born footballer ever to play for England. After starting his career with his hometown club he moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 1968 and despite a career threatening knee injury went on to score 118 goals for Spurs in 278 games over an eight year period, winning the League Cup twice as well as the UEFA Cup. He is still the club’s record goalscorer in both the UEFA Cup and the League Cup. In total he played 24 times for his country, scoring 13 goals. After a spell in Switzerland he returned to England to play for Norwich City and Brighton and Hove Albion before ending his playing career in Norway. After retiring he spent many years in the hotel business, and is now entering his 20th year at White Hart Lane working for the corporate hospitality department.
