Every game is a "must win" now!
Saturday's game against Bolton is the first of three potential "must win" games! With Man City hosting Aston Villa at the same time as our game, there is question that Spurs must see off lowly Bolton. However, having experienced banana skins such as Stoke and Wolves, we all know there is no guarantee of success for Spurs.
Incidentally, apart from Stoke and Wolves, Man Utd were the only other team to conquer Spurs this season at The Lane, and our last home defeat was in December. We've won 8 and drawn 2 home Premier League games since then, and won our last 5 home games. Spurs will be odds-on favourites to win this one.
However, Bolton can afford to play relaxed football, as they are already assured of another Premier league season, despite accumulating just 36 points to date. Owen Coyle's side host Birmingham on the last day, and will he hopeful of a win to send their fans home happy, but they will also be keen to make Saturday's game awkward for Spurs. Kevin Davies has "form" for that! Coyle's former side, Burnley, have already been relegated and he has at least avoided the record of having managed two teams to be relegated in the same season. Burnley's Brian Laws could yet achieve that record, as his last club Sheffield Wednesday really must win on Sunday to avoid the drop to League One.
Harry Redknapp's Spurs career is encapsulated by the period between this game and the last time we played Bolton at home in the Premier League. Bolton were the first team we managed to beat in the 2008-09 season, and whilst Clive Allen was in charge of team affairs that day, Harry had arrived and did "gee up" the lads. Spurs won 2-0 that day to get off the "2 points from 8 games" mark, but it did not lift us off the bottom of the league table. Here we are 18 months later challenging for a place in the Champions League, which we have coveted since its inception.
Harry Redknapp's record as Spurs manager for 65 Premier League games is 1.74 points per game. In 2010, that record stands at 1.8 points per game. It is Harry's best record as manager of any club. His best previous spell was his second time at Portsmouth, where he got 1.42 points per game. I've been a critic of Harry's selection and/or tactics for various games this season, but there is no question that overall, he has done a remarkable job for Spurs.
Harry has voiced the club's desire for the fans to lift their team to the same degree as they did in our last two home victories against Arsenal and Chelsea. Certainly, if we can show the form we did on those days, Bolton will stand no chance at all. Their fans may have sensed the same, as Spurs have been able to sell some tickets normally held for away fans to Spurs supporters.
Bolton have won just 9 league games this season, and have not beaten a top half side since October, when they beat Everton. The other top half team was Birmingham in September. In fact, those teams were in the bottom half at the time they played those games. Wanderers have won 4 away games though, and after 4 recent consecutive defeats they have managed 4 points in their last two games to ensure their survival. Former Portsmouth star Matty Taylor is their top league scorer with 8 goals, and Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic and Davies are hot on his heels. Wanderers have an 18 year old gooner, Jack Wilshere, on loan, and he will probably start against us.
Hopefully, Aaron Lennon is going to be able to start this game, and I would love to see Gareth Bale making his runs from the other side of midfield. One thing we all crave this week is a right back, and Vedran Corluka may be fit enough to play, otherwise, maybe Kyle Walker could play if Younes Kaboul gets his wish not to be a right back! I suspect that Ledley King will sit this one out in favour of next Wednesday night's crunch game at Eastlands.
There has been plenty of discussion about what would be the best result for us in the City - Villa game. Arguably that would be a Villa win provided we can win this Saturday and next Sunday. However, the really important thing is for Spurs to win, and hopefully handsomely, thus keeping fourth place and benefitting our goal difference.
I fancy us to get that handsome win this week, and will go for a 3-0!
