A famous old rivalry resumes!
Having despatched Preston North End on Wednesday night, Spurs now face another of the 12 founder members of the Football League. Burnley are also a club which has played at the same ground (Turf Moor) since the start of the Football League. Of those 12 founder members, there are currently 7 playing in the Premier League, the others being Villa, Blackburn, Bolton, Everton, Stoke and Wolves.
Burnley have every reason then to be a proud club, and this season celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their last League Championship win in 1959-60. Having been out of the top flight since 1976, it is great to see this good old football name back in the top echelon of English Football.
Many people might have thought that "The Clarets" were destined for immediate relegation, but if they can maintain their form of the first six games, by winning their home matches, then Burnley will be alright, although of course there is a long road ahead yet. Burnley's first victims at Turf Moor this season were Manchester United, the Champions. What a great scalp and a great morale booster for club and fans alike. 33 year old Robbie Blake was the hero of the hour along with goalkeeper Brian Jensen to name but two, but of course, as the manager would say, they were all heroes!
Mind you, Burnley illustrated all too clearly last season their ability to beat good Premier League sides, having beaten Fulham, Chelsea and Arsenal on their way to the Carling Cup semi-final, where they gave us the fright of our lives in the second leg at Turf Moor, before Pavlyuchenko and Defoe came to our rescue.
Burnley and Spurs were great rivals in that heyday of the late fifties/early sixties. Spurs finished third and just two points behind Burnley when they were Champions, drawing the home game and losing away. In our Double year, the home game was one of those exciting 4-4 draws which seemed to occur quite often in those days. Played on December 3rd, 1960 in wet and muddy conditions, Spurs went 4-0 up through Maurice Norman, Cliff Jones (2), and Dave Mackay.
John Connelly (who went on to play for Manchester United, and was a playing member of the England World Cup squad in 1966) made it 4-1 by half-time, before Spurs succumbed to further goals by Robson, Pointer and another by Connelly for what had seemed an unlikely result.
When we played the away game it was the week after Spurs had secured the Championship, and with a Cup Final to look forward to, we lost 4-2. Peter Baker scored one of only two league goals in his career, and Bobby Smith scored Spurs other goal. Burnley finished fourth in the league that season, but remained a top three side for two more years after that. Their tenure in Division One ended in 1971, before a brief return before they were finally relegated in 1976.
Spurs last met Burnley in league action in our one season in Division Two in 76-77. We won the home game 3-0, but lost at Turf Moor 2-1. One of the most famous encounters between the clubs was of course the 1962 FA Cup Final, which we won 3-1.
Burnley will have no Carling Cup glory this season, after losing 3-2 at Barnsley on Tuesday night. Goalkeeper Jensen and striker Martin Paterson had to be replaced through injury, and whilst Jensen will be fit, Paterson will be out for three months, which is a blow to manager Owen Coyle, with Burnley's squad being limited in numbers. Midfielder Chris McCann is another long term injury blow for Coyle.
Paterson had not scored this season anyway, and Burnley now have Portsmouth's David Nugent on loan, who did score in their 3-1 win over Sunderland last week.
Whilst Burnley have shipped a few goals on their travels, Spurs cannot afford to be complacent, after two defeats on the trot. Gomes ought to hold the goalkeeper's position after a super performance at preston, and despite Ledley King's absence, it looks like Micahel Dawson will be okay to partner Sebastien Bassong, given the all-clear after a concussion scare last week.
Modric's absence has to be accommodated for a while yet, but there are enough goals in the Spurs attack to safely put "The Clarets" away. I won't go as far as another 5-1, but I think we may see a repeat of the 4-1 win we managed in the home leg of last season's Carling Cup semi-final.
