Third Cup meeting this year
Spurs and Manchester United have a long history of meetings in both league and cup meetings. It all started 110 years ago in January 1899, when Manchester United were known as Newton Heath. Newton Heath is actually located north-east of the current Manchester City ground, so perhaps United fans really can claim that they do come from Manchester after all! However, I did overhear a conversation in a Chesterfield restaurant the other day, when an ardent United fan admitted that his team did not play in Manchester, but in Salford. That is a fact!
I have found a piece of trivia that might interest any commentator on the potential man Utd v Kettering Third Round FA Cup tie! Newton Heath played and beat Kettering in the FA Cup in two consecutive seasons - 1895-96 and 1896-97.
Spurs won that first tie after a replay 5-3, but there was a gap of 24 years before the next meeting by which time Manchester United had been formed, and were playing at Old Trafford. (Newton Heath had two homes, including United's first at Bank Street - still in the East of the City). There was also a 35 year gap between Cup meetings after 1926, and before our semi-final win in 1962.
Our cup history against United was brought up to date earlier this year, when we were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, and then lost on penalties in the Carling Cup Final.
The FA Cup game was played at Old Trafford in front of the standard 75,000 crowd. Both sides played "Cup teams", but were stronger than expected with a mix of experienced and fringe players. Roman Pavlyuchenko gave Spurs a fifth minute lead with a header across Foster from a fine cross by Huddlestone. Alnwick in goal had a good game and had made a great save from Tevez, but United were back on terms in the 35th minute, thanks to a cruelly deflected Scholes shot. Berbatov soon gave United the lead, and did not show grace in front of his former fans, celebrating with gusto.
At Wembley in March, Ben Foster won the man of the match award, giving some indication of the work he had to do. In truth it was probably awarded for a fine save from Lennon in the 70th minute, and then a save of Jamie O'Hara's penalty in the shoot-out. Spurs had given a good show against the strongest team that Sir Alex had played in last year's tournament.
United's winning Carling Cup team did still feature the likes of Gibson and Wellbeck though, and they may well feature in tomorrow night's game.
Harry Redknapp has surprisingly included Robbie Keane amongst the list of players "needing a game", and clearly indicated the skipper will start. Others mentioned were Alan Hutton, Gareth Bale and Jermaine Jenas, so we can expect to see them along with perhaps David Bentley, and maybe even Giovani Dos Santos, now back to fitness after his injury sustained in a Carling Cup game at Preston. Gio had also played in the 5-1 win at Doncaster.
We know that Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate, Luka Modric and Carlo Cudicini are injured, and that Niko Kranjcar is cup-tied. Harry Redknapp has confirmed already that Daawson and Bassong will start. Pavlyuchenko hasn't had a mention though, so we don't know if he will feature, bearing in mind that between them, he and his agent seem to be making noises about moving on in January. There would appear to be no good reason for playing someone whose heart seems no longer to be with Tottenham.
The Spurs line-up could be Gomes; Hutton, Dawson, Bassong, Bale; Bentley, Jenas, Huddlestone, Giovani; Crouch and Keane with players such as Corluka, Lennon and Defoe on the bench. But what do I know?
It should be another exciting and open game. Despite the probability of an under-strength United side, I wouldn't dare to go so far as to predict a Spurs win, but let's hope so, eh?
