Do the job this time, Spurs!
The preview for the first game of this tie can be read here, and the match report is here.
I called the first game one of two halves, but on reflection, Spurs did not really come alive until the 60 minute mark. We were lucky to be just one goal down at that time, but then dominated the rest of proceedings and might have made the replay unnecessary.
Since our Cup game, Bolton have played two more league games, drawing 0-0 at Wigan last Wednesday, and losing in the snow at Ewood Park on Sunday lunchtime 3-0. In league matches, Bolton have now failed to score in their last five games, and their only win in 10 league matches has been a 1-0 at home to Burnley.
However, this is the cup, and despite the fact that Bolton remain in the bottom three, on the evidence of the first game, they appear to be well motivated to do well in this competition. However, once again, it appears their fans cannot muster much enthusiasm, as I heard only 200 were making the trip south, making more room for Spurs fans. A full house might be a little ambitious though, and tickets were still available at the time of writing.
There are no new injury problems for Bolton, who still have Gary Cahill, Sean Davis and Gavin McCann amongst their longer term absentees. I am receiving mixed messages about the fitness of Aaron Lennon, who last week trained with the Academy, whilst the first team squad were away. Since then the word is that Aaron has suffered another set back, and the estimated time till he is fit again varies between two and six weeks.
That situation gives David Bentley more opportunities to impress, and in fairness, his form in the absence of Lennon has been pretty good. he doesn't pass players though, and for that we rely upon the continuing adventures of Gareth Bale down the left wing. Roman Pavlyuchenko must surely have earnt a start tomorrow, mustn't he? Peter Crouch would be the favourite to be rested, but with the problem of injuries (Ledley King and Jermaine Jenas are also out) and those who are cup-tied, the squad for this game will be relatively threadbare.
The starting line-up might still be very similar to that which started at Wigan, with perhaps Modric coming in for Kranjcar, and hopefully "Super Pav" up front.
As you can see above, this is the sixth FA Cup meeting between the two teams, and the fourth that has required at least one replay to find the winner. In 1925, Jimmy Seed scored for Spurs at White Hart Lane, but Bolton took us back to Burnden Park in front of over 50,000 (those were the days), where Bill Lane got one of only two FA Cup goals he scored in only 4 FA Cup games he played. It was enough to send Spurs through, but we were beaten by Blackburn in the next round.
Ten years later, Bolton were a second division side, whilst Spurs were on their way to relegation from the top tier. 70,000 watched the home tie, when Willie Evans scored for Spurs. George Hunt (The Chesterfield Flyer) scored in the first replay, but Spurs were beaten 2-0 at Villa Park. To this day, Hunt remains Spurs' third highest ever goal-scorer, with 151 goals in all competitions in just 205 appearances.
The 77-78 season was our last year in the second tier, and Bolton were our nemesis that season, eventually finishing top of the table, whilst we scraped through thanks to that last day 0-0 at The Dell. Or Cup campaign didn't last long as we lost 2-1 after extra time at Burnden Park to a side which included Sam Allardyce, Frank Worthington and Peter Reid. The Spurs side included Glenn Hoddle, Steve Perryman and Peter Taylor, who scored from the penalty spot for Spurs. Former Bolton player Don McAllister was also in the Spurs side that day.
Back to tomorrow night's replay, and an away meeting with Fulham awaits the winner in the quarter-finals. I fancy Spurs to "do the job" this time, but am I confident enough to book my travel for Saturday March 6th? I'm afraid not, but I will predict a convincing win by three or four goals for the team which has a support worthy of progress and success. Come on you Spurs!
