A bit of role-reversal
Our 5-1 win at the KC Stadium on 23rd August was the second win in our sensational 5-win opening run to the season. Hull manager Phil Brown (who has survived in the face of great pressure and repeated media speculation) said of Spurs:- “I thought there was a gulf between the two teams in terms of class, quality and the performance.” and “I thought they had everything."
Jermain Defoe got his first hat-trick of the season (the second came against Wigan). Robbie Keane and Wilson Palacios also got in on the scoring act. Keane's was a great goal which started in our own half, and Palacios's goal was his first competitive goal in our colours.
After a compulsory two week break, we must hope for similar scintillating football from our beloved Spurs, and not a repeat of the shock home defeat when Hull came to town last season. Hull had sensationally beaten Arsenal the previous week, and followed it up with a win that kept them in the top six, and Spurs at the bottom of the league. Geovanni scored Hull's ninth minute goal. The following week saw Juande Ramos's last league game in charge of the club at Stoke. One or two of his decisions in the Hull game had brought forth some derision from the home fans.
Now the tables are not exactly reversed, but Spurs are challenging for the Champions League, whilst Hull are second from bottom, without a win in their last six league games, facing a trip to Old Trafford next week, and staring down the barrel of a full-on relegation fight. Their cause is not helped by the continuing absence of Jimmy Bullard, whose presence in the side caused some resurgence, before he suffered a knee ligament injury in the game at Villa Park. This was the week after Bullard had so lifted the spirits in the club with his celebration of an equalising penalty goal at Man City's Eastland's stadium.
Hull are also without club captain Ian Ashbee, who has yet to play this season, and is out for another four months with a cruciate ligament injury. "The Tigers" have managed just three draws from their 10 away games to date, in the games at Wolves and most recently Bolton to add to that Man City result. The 2-2 draw at Bolton involved a come-back from two down, with Stephen Hunt scoring both goals, which ultimately led to the sacking of Bolton's manager Gary Megson.
Hull suffered early exits in both cup competitions, losing 4-0 at home to Everton in the third round of the league cup, and 4-1 at Wigan in this year's FA Cup third round. Morale cannot be good.
At the time of writing, there has been no significant transfer news relating to the two teams. It looks like Benoit Assou-Ekotto really is injured and will be absent for another week or so, whilst Aaron Lennon is also thought to be two weeks away with a groin strain. Jonathan Woodgate will probably also have to sit this one out with his ongoing groin problem.
The weather-enforced break surely means that Ledley King will be available, but perhaps his game will be at Anfield next Wednesday. Spurs will be looking for their sixth consecutive clean sheet in all games, and the fans will be hoping for another goal fest. Hull might make that harder to achieve, but I'll take us to win comfortably and look forward to the trip to injury-hit Anfield.
