It's Us or Them!
It's a mouth-watering penultimate Premier League game at Eastlands tomorrow! The stadium should be packed with nervous and salivating fans, and Sky's TV cameras will convey the drama of the most precious game of the season to millions of viewers around the world. No, it's not the FA Cup Final, but effectively a Play-Off Final for fourth place in this season's exciting Premier League.
Both teams have been challenging for the top four places throughout the season. Spurs had a great start, during which they held top place for one game, and have been no lower than seventh, whilst City have been between second and sixth all season. Spurs have held fourth or better on 17 weeks of the season, whilst City have been up there 19 times. Spurs have the one point advantage at present which means a draw would be enough to keep them in control of their own destiny going into their last game at Turf Moor.
Spurs fans will crow about "One Ricky Villa" and recall the dramatic Cup Final victory of 1981, whilst City fans will no doubt regale us with a chant or two about their Fourth Round Cup come-back in February 2004.
Spurs fans will be thinking about the fact that City are one of our favourite Premier League opponents, with 58 points reaped from 25 games. That's a record of 2.32 points per game, which even exceeds Harry Redknapp's excellent 1.74 points per game record since he has been Tottenham's manager. Our winning record did not stop with City's new-found wealth either, as we won last season at Eastlands.
City strengthened last summer of course, but Spurs still put them to the sword in this season's home meeting which was also on a Wednesday night in December. On that occasion we played after a dip in our form which had seen silly points lost at home to Wolves and away to Everton. Spurs came back with relish, thanks to two fine goals and a man of the match performance by Niko Kranjcar, and one from our top scorer Jermain Defoe. The Spurs side was:- Gomes; Corluka, Dawson (Capt.), Bassong, Ekotto (sub Bale, 90); Lennon, Huddlestone, Palacios, Kranjcar; Crouch, Defoe (sub Jenas, 90), but will have two or three changes for tomorrow's crunch game. Gareth Bale will of course start, but the question remains whether that will be as left back or in the midfield. Wouldn't it be exciting to see both Lennon and Bale threatening City's flanks? Younes Kaboul may have to carry on at right back, where he played so well against Bolton last Saturday. We live in hope that Ledley can play consecutive games, but if not I have every faith in Sebastien Bassong partnering the Spurs Supporters' Clubs Player of the season, Michael Dawson.
The City side in that defeat White Hart Lane was:- Given; Richards, Onuoha, Toure (Capt.), Sylvinho; de Jong (sub Petrov, 71), Ireland, Tevez, Barry; Robinho (sub Santa Cruz, 59), Adebayor. The defeat was something of a watershed for manager Mark Hughes who was so soon to be replaced by Mancini, and Robinho, who has gone back to Brazil on loan. Under Mancini's leadership, City have lost more games, but drawn less. Under Mancini's leadership, City have managed 8 clean sheets, whilst Spurs have had 11 in all competitions during the same period.
Both teams have attacking flair and skill in abundance and the strength of the defence could be the real key to success in this game. In the last 6 league games, Spurs have conceded 8 against City's more measly 4. Mind you, City's defence looked a bit shaky against Villa on Saturday, not least because of the presence of emergency loan keeper Marton Fulop from Sunderland, due to Shay Given's injury, and injury to his back-up keeper.
Spurs have a worry about Gomes after he pulled up with a groin strain in added time on Saturday, but I suspect (and hope) he'll be playing.
So its us or them for fourth place, and a Spurs win would ensure a place in the Champions League tomorrow (well, the qualifying round anyway). What an achievement that would be! City are going to have to go for a win, and I hope that Spurs don't play for a draw. In the Pink Floyd song "Us and them" there was a line "Forward he cried and the front rank died". Well, I don't want the front rank to die, but I do want Harry Redknapp to cry "forward!" and take the game to City.
I think that Spurs will at least get the draw, but hope that we'll get a narrow win (2-1) and paint the town Lilywhite and Blue afterwards!
COME ON YOU SPURS!
