Can Spurs be contenders?
Picture caption - "Aaron Lennon played a magnificent part in England's win in midweek and could be the key to Spurs' success against Manchester United. His battle with Patrice Evra is as mouth-watering as any individual tussle between these sides down the years"
It's second v third in the Barclays Premier League tomorrow, and it is a contest between these two sides that is being anticipated as much as any in recent years and as far back as the sixties, when Spurs and United were two of the biggest draws in the English game. United have remained so throughout the Premiership years, whilst Spurs have generally disappointed, despite their admirable loyal support.
Some Spurs fans have been pinching themselves after the 12 point start after 4 games, and asking if they can really be contenders in this year's title race. Our next two games (Chelsea away next Sunday) will give us more of an idea of our true level, but three or more points from these two games would be excellent.
Aaron Lennon played a magnificent part in England's win in midweek and could be the key to Spurs' success against Manchester United. His battle with Patrice Evra is as mouth-watering as any individual tussle between these sides down the years.
Despite the absence of Luka Modric and the continuing recovery of players such as Gareth Bale, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson, Spurs can still field a strong side tomorrow, with Gomes returning and the full-strength back four of recent weeks able to play - including Ledley King. Jermaine Jenas is fit, but likely to start on the bench with Tom Huddlestone continuing his partnership with Wilson Palacios. Palacios has had an arduous journey back from Mexico where our own Giovani Dos Santos inspired his team to victory.
The feeling is that Keane will play on the left and that Peter Crouch will partner Jermain Defoe - also a Spurs and England hero over the last week. United have their own hero (villain?) in the shape of Wayne Rooney, and although he missed the Internationals Rio Ferdinand may return.
United suffered an early defeat at Turf Moor, but Sir Alex has got his side ticking over again, despite the loss of quality players such as Ronaldo and Tevez. Their win over Arsenal was evidence of their return to form.
So - can Spurs really be contenders? Can they beat United tomorrow? I'll reserve judgement on the first question until after the Chelsea game, but I do think we can beat United tomorrow in what should be an exciting game with Spurs getting the better of three goals - 2-1.
