Why shouldn't we do the "double" over West Ham?

We did it last season, and we have done it in two of the last three seasons! Our win at Upton Park on 23rd August was the third of our opening winning run of five games, two of which were 5-1 victories. We went top of the league thanks to two goals by Jermain Defoe (surely to start tomorrow) and Aaron Lennon. Carlton Cole had given the home side a boost with his 49th minute un-stoppable shot, but West Ham's favourite boo-man (or is that Frank Lampard?) levelled thanks to a poor back pass by Cole, before Lennon scored a 79th minute winner with his left foot. It was our fourth consecutive win against The "Hammers".

Despite their battle for survival in this year's Premier League, Gianfranco Zola's team will come to The Lane in good spirits after their determined home draw against Chelsea (who had a lucky penalty), and a vital 2-0 win on Boxing Day against Portsmouth. That came as a result of 23rd minute penalty by Diamanti, and a late goal by Radoslav Kovac (his first of the season). As a result of Hull's defeat today, The "Irons" are out of the bottom three for this visit. The win against Portsmouth came at the expense of losing star midfielder Mark Noble to a hamstring injury, and it is yet to be fully assessed regarding his length of absence.

Noble is the sort of determined player with flair that has often been able to put a spoke in Spurs' ambitions, but they will still have the competitive Scott Parker to contend with. Another absentee will be Carlton Cole, off for another two weeks with his knee injury sustained in November. Cole is still West Ham's top scorer, with 7 to his name in all competitions, but the Italian Diamanti is catching him up with 5 to his credit.

In one journal recently, goalkeeper Robert Green was touted as a possible capture for Chelsea to replace the so-called out of form Petr Cech, but after his glitch at The Reebock stadium recently, I find that surprising. Green did keep a clean sheet yesterday (his first since August), but Heurelho Gomes has now got three consecutive clean sheets to his name!

Spurs have not acheived this since August 2006, when Blackburn were one of our opponents, as they were on 19th December in the current run.

Once upon a time in English football, there were matches on both Christmas Day and Boxing day. West Ham were our opponents the last time this happened in 1958, but we lost both games. Least said, the better!

It was eastern promise that did for The Hammers in the corresponding match of last season, as Corluka and Modric combined to provide for a cleverly finished goal by Spurs outcast Roman Pavlyuchenko. This was Pavlyuchenko's last league goal for Spurs, but he has hardly had a look-in since, and is not likely to feature tomorrow - part from on the bench.

Ledley King is set for a start apparently, and Sebastien Bassong should also be available despite his head blow at Craven Cottage. Luka Modric and Defoe will surely start this one, and Tom Huddlestone is probably set to replace Jenas or Palacios. Spurs will probably face a five-man midfield, so need to be prepared for a dog-fight in the battle zones.

A win would take us back into the top four for at least a day and possibly beyond, as Villa face Liverpool on Tuesday.

Why shouldn't Spurs do the "double" over West Ham? No reason at all, but no-one should expect a walk-over, although I predict a 3-1 win. The foibles of the fixture list could lead to us not playing West Ham at all in 2010, whatever happens to them this season, but if all goes well tomorrow, expect to hear "We'll never play you again" from the stands. Mind you, like every yo-yo club, West Ham do keep bouncing back!
