Revenge would be sweet!
So just how did Mick McCarthy's Wolves manage to beat Spurs 1-0 at The Lane in December? They arrived in the bottom three, whereas Spurs were in fourth place. Perhaps the Wolves manager saw a chink of hope, having seen Spurs surrender a two goal lead the previous week at Goodison Park, and he also knew that we had failed to beat Stoke at home in October.
McCarthy played his best available eleven, and did not play a 4-5-1, but two strikers, although having taken an early lead, Wolves fought tooth and nail to get behind the ball and thwart any hope of a Spurs equaliser. Unlike that Stoke game, Spurs did not even manage to put the Wolves keeper under great pressure, and at the end of the season (or even before) I am positive that Spurs will rue the lost points against Wolves and Stoke in particular. Mind you, we can add the draws at against Villa, against Everton and at home to Hull to the catalogue of lost opportunities.
Despite the fact that Wolves are still in the bottom three (now one place worse than when they visited us), they live in hope of salvation, thanks to the three points gained from us, and then the following week at home to Burnley. McCarthy caused plenty of controversy by fielding a weak team at Old Trafford between those winning games, but he would not have dreamt of a six point haul from those three games.
Unfortunately, Wolves have not managed a league win since that Burnley game, losing at home to Man City and Wigan, and away to Liverpool and last week, Birmingham. Their away game at Upton Park was postponed due to the big freeze, and that is one of their six-pointers to come. Wolves have a friendly looking last three games against Blackburn, Portsmouth and Sunderland, but of course every point is precious, and with their passionate fans behind them, they'll fancy their chances tomorrow.
As for Spurs, after that last home defeat they went on a run of five league games without conceding a goal, winning three and drawing the other two. Man City were the immediate victims after the Wolves defeat.
Our last visit to Molineux was on 15th May 2004. It was the last game of the season and Wolves had already been relegated. The game was enjoyable from a football perspective for Spurs fans, as Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe performed the last rites of Wolves first Premiership season, but one to be forgotten as regards to the treatment by the local police. You'd be well advised not to wear colours, and not to park far from the railway station, as the chances are you'll be forcibly penned and herded there after the game anyway!
Tom Huddlestone played in 13 league games on loan at Wolves, immediately after we bought him from Derby. Tom scored one goal in his stay at Wolves, and no doubt will be received warmly by the home fans tomorrow. There will be no Robbie Keane of course. Others who have played for both clubs include Rohan Ricketts, Steffan Iversen, Allan Nielsen, Andy Sinton, Dean Richards and Hans Segers. Glenn Hoddle of course managed both clubs, taking over at Wolves after the unfortunate Dave Jones, who is now at Cardiff.
Spurs have stated that Ledley King will be rested, and that Aaron Lennon and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are not yet ready for action. Roman Pavlyuchenko is available, and he is likely to be the only change to the squad from Saturday's game, apart from the absence of Ledley. Eidur Gudjohnsen must surely play some part in yet another crucial game. I'll take Spurs to repeat their 2-0 scoreline of May 2004.
Did you know? Spurs' very first league game was against Wolves on September 1st 1908. A crowd of some 20,000 watched Spurs win 3-0, with Vivian Woodward becoming the first player to score a league goal for Spurs. he added another too, with Tom Morris also getting his name on that historic score-sheet.
