From a hard place to Blackpool rock.
This match has been re-arranged from the original date of 19th December, 2010. My original preview for that date can be read here. That preview features some more of the history of Spurs fixtures against The "Seasiders".
It is interesting to note that in 9 games since the postponed match at Bloomfield Road, Spurs have gained 20 points, whilst in 10 games, Ian Holloway's side have managed just 7 points. Since completing a league "double" over Liverpool on January 12th, Blackpool have lost 5 and drawn one game. That draw came 10 days ago against Aston Villa. In those 5 defeats, Blackpool have not failed to score and the games saw a total of 25 goals, 8 of them at Goodison Park in a 5-3 defeat on a day when there were a record number of goals in the Premier League.
When we were originally due to meet Blackpool they were a respectable 10th in the league with no apparent fears of relegation. They need to get their game together and collect some points now, as they have fallen to a position where relegation is very definitely a possibility. It seems though that Blackpool will continue to play "gung-ho" football come what may. Spurs can expect a very, very committed team effort tomorrow.
Last week it was the San Siro. This week it's Bloomfield Road. The task is no less difficult, and no less important, as Spurs pursue the right to play in next season's Champions League. By winning this game, Spurs could stake a very serious claim and lay down the gauntlet to fifth placed Chelsea, who would be 5 points behind, and who will face Manchester United in their next league game, next Wednesday. Spurs would also climb above Man City and hold third place at least until the week-end.
Spurs are looking for their third consecutive away win in the league and their fourth consecutive away win including the AC Milan game last week. They would also be after a fifth consecutive win including the home win against Bolton.
The last time Spurs completed a run of three away league wins was on Boxing Day 2004, when they won 2-0 at Carrow Road, against a Norwich side that included David Bentley, when he was on loan from Arsenal. A Redknapp was involved for Spurs on that day, as Harry's son Jamie came off the bench for Spurs. Spurs' goals came courtesy of Robbie Keane and Michael Brown. That 2004 run of away wins included Blackburn (as does the current run) and Manchester City. The last time Spurs completed four consecutive away league wins was in March and April, 1989.
The best ever sequence was TEN consecutive away league wins. It started on April 15, 1960 away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The last game in the sequence was against Newcastle at St James Park on October 29, 1960 and they lost the next away game against Sheffield Wednesday on November 12. During these ten games they outscored the opposition 32-11. That is an incredible average of 3.2 goals scored per away game. In eight of those games they scored three or more goals.
This sequence was for many years the best away winning record until Chelsea won 11 away league games during 2007-08 and 2008-09.
The third game in that sequence and the first away win of the 1960-61 season was on Monday 22 August 1960 at Bloomfield Road when Spurs beat Blackpool 3-1. Dyson game them the lead after 9 minutes with a header following a corner. Blackpool were awarded a penalty when Baker fouled Charnley after half an hour but Arthur Kaye put it wide. Medwin put Spurs two up before half time.
John White was outstanding throughout the game. Dyson scored Spurs third in the second half set up by Baker. Jackie Mudie scored a consolation goal for Blackpool. Stanley Matthews played for Blackpool.
The teams were:-
Tottenham:-
Bill Brown, Peter Baker, Ron Henry, Danny Blanchflower, Maurice Norman, Dave Mackay, Terry Medwin, John White, Bobby Smith, Les Allen and Terry Dyson. (Cliff Jones had suffered an ankle injury two days previously against Everton and was unable to play).
Blackpool:-
Tony Waiters, Jimmy Armfield, Barrie Martin, James Kelly, Roy Gratrix, Dave Durie, Stanley Matthews, Jackie Mudie, Ray Charnley, Arthur Kaye, Leslie Campbell.
Thanks to Declan Mulcahy for his help with some of the above information
Tomorrow night, Spurs will be without Rafael van der Vaart, who has a calf muscle strain, along with Gareth Bale,Jonathan Woodgate, Vedran Corluka, Younes Kaboul, Tom Huddlestone and of course Ledley King. The recent absence of Alan Hutton has yet to be properly ecxplained by Spurs, but he might be drafted in to replace Corluka tomorrow. On the other hand William Gallas could again fill in at right back, with Dawson and Bassong in the middle of the defence. Harry still has plenty of options in midfield, where Luka Modric is bound to feature, and up front with three fit strikers.
I'll go for a Spurs win, but it will probably be by the odd goal in three.
