Let's win it for Bobby!

Bobby Smith would have relished this game. Whilst Spurs never met Arsenal in Cup competition during his time at White Hart Lane, Bobby Smith did play in 13 league games against The Gunners, scoring in 8 of those games. His total of 10 goals is the highest of any Spurs player in our league history with our near rivals.

Bobby's fifth Spurs game was against Arsenal (14th January, 1956), but he did not score his first goal until the following week against Everton. As we all know, Bobby didn't look back, as he overtook George Hunt's scoring record, and still remains our second highest goalscorer, behind his great pal Jimmy Greaves. Bobby did score in his next game against The Gooners in October, 1956, although we lost that game. In February 1958, Bobby got a brace in a 4-4 draw, and he also got two goals in his last game against this opposition in another 4-4, on October 15th 1963.

In his 2002 book My Memories of Spurs - ISBN 1 904103 08 1 (Foreword by Jimmy Greaves) Bobby refers to his favourite game against Arsenal with a reference to the 3-0 win on 16th January, 1960 (mis-dated as 1961 in the book). Bobby described little Tommy Harmer skating on the icy surface and setting up Bobby's goal, and also having a hand in one of Les Allen's two goals.

Bobby's passing will no doubt be remembered in a most appropriate fashion tomorrow night and deserves to be remembered with a Spurs win!

It is of course a particular pleasure to cast our minds back to January 2008, when Spurs annihilated Arsenal 5-1 in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. Jermaine Jenas had given us a first half lead in the first leg at The Emirates Stadium, but Walcott got a second half equaliser in front of a reduced crowd of some 53,000. (Arsenal 1 Spurs 1)

Jenas also scored the first goal in the second leg at White Hart Lane in front of a delirious near capacity crowd. Arsenal might claim they fielded a "League Cup side", but most of the names were quite seasoned first team regulars. Jenas headed a diamond shaped midfield, and this was one of Juande Ramos's great successes at Spurs, before they went on to lift the trophy with another fine win against Chelsea.

Jenas then had a hand in Spurs'second goal, as he took a free kick, and Bendtner managed to head an own goal to the obvious delight of the home fans, who now sniffed victory over Arsenal for the first time since 1999. The third goal came just after the break, and it was a good Robbie Keane shot from a Lennon pass that hit the net to more roars of ecstacy. Keane provided the final pass for the fourth goal, scored by Aaron Lennon.

Substitute Adebayor did get on the scoresheet in the 70th minute, but Spurs even managed a fifth goal in the last minute, with Jenas the provider again, this time for Steed Malbranque.

As we know, both teams tomorrow will probably be radically different from recent league sides. Therefore we might not see the recent signings by Arsene Wenger - defender Squillaci, and striker Chamakh. Maybe not even another new signing and a defender - Laurent Koscielny. We might even see an Englishman or two! Whoever does represent the old enemy will be playing fast effective passing football, and will present a strong challenge.

The Spurs team news indicates there must be changes. Both Corluka and Kaboul are injured now, but it seems that William Gallas might be okay to play against his former team. He will probably be partnered by Bassong, and Alan Hutton looks likely to get the nod at right back. Aaron Lennon only had a few minutes on Saturday, and could start on the left, with Bale surely in need of some rest. David Bentley might also get a game. Harry Redknapp has hinted very strongly that Sandro will make his debut, perhaps next to an in-form Jenas, with Huddlestone also needing a break - perhaps on the bench. Luka Modric wasn't mentioned on the injury list, so perhaps he can start this one.

Ultimately, tomorrow night is not about them, and it is not about us. This occasion is primarily about remembering a true hero of Tottenham Hotspur - Bobby Smith. Let's win it for Bobby!
