Up against our favourites
Everton must wish for different opposition against which to try and lift themselves out of the relegation battle tomorrow night. Following wins tonight for Fulham and Birmingham, the "Toffees" find themselves fully immersed in the fight to avoid the bottom three, being only two points clear of the drop zone and four clear of bottom club Wolves. Whilst Spurs will be hoping that Wolves can get something out of their home game against Chelsea, Everton must hope for the opposite as failure against Spurs and victory for Wolves would increase their danger.
Everton are our favourite Premier League opponents as we have gained more points against them. This is partly because they are one of the other 6 ever-present Premier League teams. Proportionately we have gained more points per match against other teams, such as Manchester City.
Whilst Everton have won three of their last six league games at White Hart lane, it is 7 years since they last managed a home win against Spurs. This was on a not very Good Friday, when Everton won 3-1. Stephen Carr scored a solitary consolation goal for Spurs and also got sent off. The Spurs team was:- Spurs (4-4-2):- Keller; Carr, Doherty, Gardner, Kelly; Davies (sub Ricketts, 72), Redknapp(Capt.) (sub Bunjevcevic, 72), Ziege (sub Kanoute, 46); Defoe, Keane, and the unused substitutes were goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld and Johnnie Jackson. That's how long ago it was! Johnnie Jackson and Gary Doherty are now playing for Charlton, who are our cup opponents next Sunday. Hirschfeld is now playing for Norwegian club Valerenga.
Everton face the quite immense task of trying to beat Spurs without their star man and top goalscorer Tim Cahill, who has jetted off to play for Australia in the Asia Cup against such eminent teams as India, South Korea and Bahrain. Cahill has 9 league goals to his credit, and his closest rival is Mikel Arteta, on 3 goals. Everton will also be without England defender Phil Jagielka, who aggravated a thigh strain in the 2-0 defeat at Stoke on Saturday.
Spurs have their own injury problems, with Alan Hutton and William Gallas doubtful for this game, along with the long-standing absentees Huddlestone, King and Woodgate. Carlo Cudicini will also have to sit this one out with a shoulder injury. Defoe and Kaboul are still suspended.
However, Vedran Corluka came in for Hutton on Saturday and played more minutes (64) than he had in a league game since late September. Sebastien Bassong is always ready to step up to the plate and partner Michael Dawson. Harry Redknapp still has options!
The last two league games between these two sides have ended in draws though, and we must not under-estimate Everton's ability to play tight, and physically challenging football. In the home game in October Phil Neville did a job on Gareth Bale, but he was ably assisted by his midfield. Leighton Baines put Everton in the lead with an unstoppable free kick, but Rafael van der Vaart soon equalised.
Spurs have every reason to approach this game with confidence, as they are on an eleven game unbeaten run at this time. This includes 9 league games and two in the Champions League. Just think, we only have to keep winning, or match Chelsea's results till the end of the season to stay in the Champions league places! Well, I know it is not as simple as that, but you know what I mean. With Arsenal playing Man City tomorrow night, we wwill gain ground on one or both of those teams with a win at Goodison, and I think we will do it too. I'll predict a 2-0 win for Spurs.
