This could be fun!
The last time we played Newcastle United was in April 2009, when Alan Shearer was in charge trying to fire-fight the Magpies' way out of relegation. Spurs won 1-0 to add to "The Toon's" troubles, and of course they failed to escape the drop, going down with just 34 points. Darren Bent was the sole scorer in a game which did feature a 20 year old Andy Carroll who was trying to establish himself in the Premier League side.
Carroll of course has recently been linked with us, but I suspect this was a speculative Sunday tabloid story on a football-starved week-end 10 days ago. Carroll did establish himself as a first choice striker for his club in their most recent Championship season, and has been winning headlines (usually for the right reasons) in the Premier League, where he has scored 11 goals, and is only behind Dimitar Berbatov and Carlos Tevez in that particular list. Our own Rafael van der Vaart now has 8 league goals to his name, and is not far behind Carroll. Van der Vaart has also now overtaken Gareth Bale and Roman Pavlyuchenko as our top scorer in all competitions this season with, not surprisingly, the best score ratio (goals per minute played) of all Spurs players. As for Carroll, he even made an England debut against France last month, and gave a good account of himself.
Three of Carroll's Premier League goals were scored in Newcastle's phenomenal 6-0 drubbing of Aston Villa. I have been told by Newcastle fans that the scoreline did not match the play, as Villa actually played a lot of good football. Statistics pay no heed to such comments of course.
Spurs fans will have it in for Newcastle because of the way one of their own (Chris Hughton) was treated by the Newcastle Board, despite winning them promotion in style, and gaining them a mid-table berth with that 6-0, a 5-1 win over Sunderland, and a 1-0 win at The Emirates being particular highlights. Newcastle also beat Chelsea 4-3 at Stamford Bridge in an exciting Carling Cup game, but lost 4-0 at home to Arsenal in the next round.
It's a little known fact the the new manager of Newcastle - Alan Pardew - wore Spurs colours as a loan player (from Charlton) during the Inter-Toto Cup of 1995. Spurs had sent their first team on tour and fielded a mixture of young reserve and youth players, together with loan players to "compete" in what was a very new and hardly respected tournament. The Sky Football Yearbook religiously lists Spurs' 8-0 defeat to Cologne as their record defeat, but of course Spurs statisticians like to ignore the tournament, as being un-representative.
On the other hand, a team such as Newcastle, with a very scarce honours list in the last 55 years can list themselves as runners-up (2001) and winners in 2005 and 2006. Such an accolade was earnt by more than one team qualifying for the UEFA Cup proper.
I am sure there will be songs of love and joy aimed at Chrissy Hughton, but Newcastle's squad might include the hate figure of Spurs since his departure from our "shores" in 2001. 36 year old Sol Campbell signed for Newcastle in the summer, but he is getting old and slow now, and has not covered himself in glory when he has played for them this season. He started in that Carling Cup win over Chelsea, and in the last three Premier League games, but MOTD cameras exposed him in Newcastle's 3-1 defeat at West Brom. Campbell took no part in yesterday's defeat by Man City, so we may not even see him.
Newcastle's last three games have ended in results of 3-1. They lost at West Brom, and at home to Man City on Boxing Day, but beat Liverpool in Pardew's home debut as manager. His appointment remains an unsolved mystery and there's a tale to be told surely regarding his departure from Southampton near the start of the season, and his eventual appointment in place of Hughton.
Harry Redknapp has to make one enforced change after yesterday's game, and that relates to the dismissal of Jermain Defoe. There has been no news yet of any appeal about that decision and technically I suspect the powers that be would support it, meaning Spurs would run the risk of an additional match suspension for an unreasonable appeal. This will mean a start for either Peter Crouch or Roman Pavlyuchenko, whilst hopefully the midfield of Lennon, Palacios, Modric and Bale, together with Van der Vaart will be fit enough to play this second game in two days.
Sebastien Bassong was snapped up by Spurs after Newcastle's relegation and was unfortunate to lose his place for the Villa game. No doubt he would relish a chance to play against his old team (Why do players think in that way?), but I suspect he'll start on the bench again.
I am looking forward to seeing Spurs express themselves in this game, and I fancy Newcastle's 3-1 trend to continue - in our favour, of course! It could be fun!
