In search of a "Grand"

Spurs travel to Wearside this Saturday tea-time (ESPN - 5.30 pm) in search of their 1000th Premier League point. In truth they will be hoping to come back with 1002 Premier League points, after a win rather than a draw. Spurs are sixth in the all-time Premier League table, 54 points ahead of Everton, who are the lowest ranked of the seven ever-present Premier League sides. Sunderland lie 20th in that statistical table with just 385 points, but then they were not founders at this level, and have suffered three relegations in the 19 year history of this league.

In Sunderland's first Premier League season of 1996-97 (their last at Roker Park), Spurs gained a league "double" with a 2-0 home win (goals by Sinton and Sheringham) and a 4-0 away victory, which featured a Steffen Iversen hat-trick and a goal by Allan Nielsen. Spurs manager Gerry Francis was even quoted as saying that Spurs could be a force in the 97-98 season. He got sacked after 14 games of that season!

With Peter Reid in charge, Sunderland bounced back in 1999, and finished that season in seventh place with current Chairman Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips having a successful partnership. In more recent years, two relegations were recorded with record low points tallies, but now with Steve Bruce at the helm the "Black Cats" are once again challenging for a place in Europe, having recorded a number of remarkable results.

Most memorable of course, was their 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, which included a "Ricky Villa type" goal by Nedum Onuoha, who is on loan from Man City. Sunderland also beat City at home with a late, late Darren Bent goal at the start of the season, and recently completed a league "double" over Aston Villa, to whom they have since sold Bent for a record club fee. Bent is currently fourth equal in the league top scorers' list, level with our own Rafael van der Vaart and Newcastle's Kevin Nolan. The top three league scorers are Berbatov, Tevez and Carroll. Last year, Bent upset us with his goals and his celebration in a 3-1 win at The Stadium of Light.

There won't be many former Spurs players in the Sunderland squad this Saturday. As well as Bent's departure, Andy Reid has been transferred to Blackpool, after a loan period at Sheffield United. Former Spurs third choice keeper Marton Fulop left for Ipswich this season, and former loanee striker Fraizer Campbell is still out with a long term cruciate knee injury. That leaves Steed Malbranque as the only possible former Spur in the Sunderland side, but he is not a regular choice these days.

Sunderland have been coping with other injury problems, such as Danny Welbeck's hamstring and Lee Cattermole's back problem. They've recently recruited Inter's Sully Muntari on loan, and of course they have Ghanaan striker Asamoah Gyan, who scored the equaliser in our home game this season .

Both teams will have players returning from far flung quarters of the globe after this week's International friendly matches. Harry Redknapp also has to temper his selection with the need to get a result next Tuesday night in Milan, as we resume our Champions League programme. There are mixed messages about Bale's fitness for next Tuesday, but in any event he will surely not be going to Sunderland. Similarly, Luka Modric might just make it back to the fold for the AC Milan game. The Spurs team against Sunderland is not likely to be much different from that which beat Bolton last Saturday.

Sunderland are playing on the back of two defeats as opposed to Spurs' two consecutive wins. Steve Bruce will be determined that his side give a show in front of the home fans, and this will be a tough game. We might have to be happy with a draw.
