Spurs looking for a Premier League record
It's third top versus third bottom on this Saturday, and Spurs will be looking for a new club record in the Premier League. We have yet to manage 6 successive league wins in the top tier under its present title. The last time we managed the feat was towards the end of the 1989-90 season (when we also finished in third place). Our victims were Liverpool (H), Sheffield Wednesday (A), Nottingham Forest (A), Coventry (H), Millwall (A), and Manchester United. Wimbledon brought our run to an end before we won our last game at home to Southampton. It is interesting to note how much the teams in the top tier change over the years.
The fact that Spurs will start as odds on favourites to win this game does not of course guarantee that we will equal that record of 1989-90. After all, in December 1995, Spurs were getting towards the end of an 11 game unbeaten run in the Premier League, and had a chance of going second above Manchester United. Bolton, managed by Roy McFarland, and in bottom place, put the mockers on that by coming back from 2-0 down to grab a draw. One of their scorers was former Spur Gudni Bergsson. Bolton stayed in bottom place and were relegated. That draw came in the middle of 6 games, of which they lost five!
This week-end, we could go second again for at least a couple of hours, if we win, because Man Utd play Aston Villa in the evening kick-off.
Saturday's game will be preceded by a one-minute silence in tribute to Gary Speed, who spent three and a half years at Bolton after being signed in July 2004. Speed played in 7 Bolton games against us, of which they won 4 drew 1 and only lost 2. Speed scored from the penalty spot against us, in February 2007, when Robbie Keane got sent off for deliberate handball, after he had already scored 2 goals, and we were 3-1 up. Spurs won that game 4-1, and it was one of those occasions when Berbatov played magnificently on his own in front of the depleted team. (Spurs 4 Bolton 1 - 25th February, 2007)
Bolton were our visitors on the day we mourned Bill Nicholson, and I am sure that the remembrance of Gary Speed will be dignified tomorrow.
Bolton are a club in trouble. They've managed only 9 points in their 13 games this season, but two of their three wins have been by great margins. On the opening day of the season, the "Trotters" beat QPR 4-0 away with goals by Spurs target Gary Cahill, Gabbidon, Klasnic and Muamba. They beat Wigan 3-1 in October and managed a home win against Stoke (5-0) on 6th November. Chris Eagles, once a Manchester United youngster, and last at Burnley, scored 2 of those goals against Stoke.
Bolton have not drawn any competitive game since February, when they drew at Newcastle. That's a run of 23 league games. They'd be happy with a point against Spurs this week. They'll be missing David Wheater though, who got sent off last week for the second time this season, and has a 4 match ban. Bolton have had some bad luck with injuries so far, and have been missing midfielder Stuart Holden since September and the South Korean Lee Chung-Yong, who suffered a broken leg before the season had even started. They also signed defender Tyrone Mears from Owen Coyle's former club Burnley, but Mears too suffered a broken leg, sustained in training only a week after he joined the club.
The word I've been hearing is that Rafael van der Vaart will not be quite ready for this game, so that should be another start for Jermain Defoe. Otherwise it could be the usual first choice Premier Leaague team for Spurs. I'm going for a 3-1 win, on the basis that the battering ram that is Kevin Davies always seems to either score or create at least one goal against us, even though he has now reached the grand old footballer's age of 34.
