Have Spurs got "bouncebackability"?

This week we play our 150th league match against Manchester United. Last week we played our 150th such game against Arsenal. There is a massive gulf regarding our results in matches against these two teams. We've now played 39 Premier League games against each side. In the case of our games against Sir Alex Ferguson's side (for he has of course been their manager throughout the history of the Premier League), we have managed just 17 points. That's nothing short of a disgrace, and of course relegation form. At least we have managed 41 points against Arsenal, and would just about survive in most Premier League seasons.

We've only ever won three Premier league games (all at home) against United. One of these was a meaningless end of season affair in May 2001, when Willem Korsten played his last official game for the club, and scored his last two goals in a 3-1 victory. United had already secured the Premier League title, and finished the season with a 10 point gap between them and Arsenal. (Spurs 3 Man Utd 1 - 19th May, 2001) The only player on either side who could feature on Sunday is Paul Scholes.

Paul Scholes scored an own goal in the corresponding game of 1999-2000, to contribute towards another 3-1 win for Spurs. The other Spurs goals came from Iversen, and that spectacular effort from Stephen Carr. All this came after Ryan Giggs had put United in the lead. United won the league that season as well, and had an even bigger margin over Arsenal - 18 points. ( Spurs 3 Man Utd 1 - 23rd October, 1999). Scholes also took part in this game. Ryan Giggs last week scored United's last ditch winner at Norwich in what was his 900th appearance in all games for United. He has been playing league football at the top level for over 20 years now, and has scored in every Premier League season.

Spurs' only other Premier League win against United came on New Year's Day in 1996. The United side did feature a French loan player in defence - William Prunier - but otherwise they did start with a strong team. Schmeichel went off at half time with a calf injury. Sheringham and Campbell gave Spurs a first half lead. Armstrong scored two headers in the second half. It was United's biggest league defeat in four years, but again, they went on to claim the Premier League title, this time over Kevin Keegan's "I would love it" Newcastle.

It's been a funny old Premier League season this time around, and even United have not been immune from a massive beating, suffering that famous 6-1 home defeat by City in October. Sir Alex's side bounced back from that situation with a run of 9 unbeaten games, and only two goals conceded, winning 8 and drawing 1 game. Following their New Year blip of two consecutive defeats, United have again been unbeaten in 6 games. They've drawn only one of those games, at Chelsea, and there they came back from being three goals down.

Whilst Spurs maintain they still have a chance in the title race, United do remain major contenders against City, and they will not want to lose ground against us.

Spurs managed their own positive statement after that disastrous start to the season, losing to both Manchester clubs. We went on our own run of a magnificent 10 wins in 11 games, with one match drawn. We need to display what has been called "bouncebackability" in what is a crucial game for both sides. If we win, I'll be convinced that we will go on to hold third place. Anything less will put us in a nervous situation with a team or two behind us likely to gain ground, and make the forthcoming away games at Everton and Chelsea all the more difficult.

The last time (before last week) Spurs lost a game 5-2 was at Old Trafford in April 2009. That was another occasion when we had taken a two goal lead, only to suffer a remarkable turn around against us. (Man Utd 5 Spurs 2 - 25th April, 2009). Spurs won 2, drew 1, and lost 1 of their remaining games that season, finishing 8th.

We await official team news, but there has been some worrying news about a hamstring injury to Gareth Bale, which may keep him out of this game. On the other hand, both Rafa van der Vaart and Kyle Walker, who withdrew from this week's International friendly matches, are likely to be fit, and Aaron Lennon ought to start if indeed Bale is absent. Similarly, United are likely to field those who withdrew from International duty, such as Wayne Rooney. Scott Parker is suspended following his sending off last week, and will be a big miss. Sandro and/or Livermore will have to be at their best in front of the back four, I think.

It should be a humdinger of a game. I'll hope for a win, but expect a draw at best.
