Let's win this one for 'Arry!
As I have written earlier in the week there ought to be a really "triffic" atmosphere tomorrow for this game being televised at tea-time by ESPN. That atmosphere will be for manager Harry Redknapp, and now not just because of his acquittal at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, but also because Spurs fans on the whole are determined to keep Harry at White Hart Lane. What a day he had on Wednesday with the relief of the end of his court case (unanimously found not guilty by the jury), and then, perhaps even before he got home to Sandra, the news that Fabio Capello had resigned. That meant that Harry was inevitably mooted as the next England manager. He remains odds on to be the next permanent manager, but in the meantime, Stuart Pearce will lead England. What will happen when we get to the Euro 2012 tournament is another question, but for the moment, Harry has resoundly stated that his focus is totally on Tottenham Hotspur.
This is where that focus needs to be, and that of the spurs squad. Scott Parker effectively said on Monday night that the team missed Harry on the bench, and the manager's presence, influence and inspiration will certainly be required in yet another tough fixture.
When we met "The Magpies" at St James' Park (sorry - The Sports Direct Stadium) in October, our opponents were flying in fourth place and unbeaten in 7 Premier League games. The feeling was that their challenge would falter with the difficult games to come after Spurs. They have lost 6 games since our 2-2, and not all against the hard opponents, with Fulham surprising recent winners by a 5-2 scoreline three weeks ago. They have also lost narrowly at home to West Brom; 4-2 away to Norwich; and by differing scorelines in more predictable defeats at home to Chelsea and away to Man City and Liverpool.
On the other hand, They had a glorious 3-0 win over Man Utd on January 4th, and in all have won 4 of their last 5 league games, despite missing key players such as Demba Ba, and Cheick Tiote, who have been away at the African Cup of Nations. Demba Ba returned last Sunday, and scored against Aston Villa, but Tiote's Ivory Coast have reached the final of the International tournament being held this week-end. Ba's International (Senegal) partner, Papiss Cisse made a sensational debut for Newcastle in that Villa game, scoring a cracking goal in front of the Gallowgate End. Cisse has a good scoring ratio for both his country and his recent clubs in Germany and France.
Another key player for Newcastle this season has been French midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who was signed from French Champions Lille last summer. However, Cabaye will miss our game, as he will serve the last of a three match suspension, following an incident in the FA Cup defeat at Brighton, which went un-noticed by the referee, but was punished after the game by the disciplinary panel.
It is to Newcastle's credit that they have maintained a challenge for a top four place after 24 games, when they have missed key players at various times. They've missed Steven Taylor since early December (achilles), and in last week's Villa game lost Ryan Taylor, Leon Best and Shola Ameobi to injuries that will keep them out of our game.
Spurs have had their own injury problems of course, and managed a great draw at Anfield with Kaboul, Van der Vaart, Lennon, Defoe, and Sandro all missing. Gallas and Tom Huddlestone are longer term absentees, but the first named could all be available for tomorrow's game. That will possibly mean Kaboul replacing Ledley King, who may not make a third game in 12 days.
Spurs have now drawn 200 of their 758 Premier League games to date, 99 of which have been at White Hart Lane. We do not want to see the 100th tomorrow, and with the crowd at their best; injured players returning to action; and Newcastle missing one or two too many key players, I feel confident that we will reap all three points. I'll go for a 3-1 scoreline. That could make it a good week-end for us, with Man Utd hosting Liverpool, Chelsea at Everton and Man City at Aston Villa. Arsenal are at Sunderland too, but as they are ten points behind us, they're hardly worth a mention, are they?
COME ON YOU SPURS!
