A hardy band 2000 miles away!

By now both the Spurs squad (minus Harry Redknapp and most of his first team) and a hardy band of supporters will have left on their lengthy expedition to Kazan, far to the east of Moscow. It's a distance of 2000 miles and one that Harry Redknapp did not want his first choice players to contemplate. We have heard today that Harry has undergone minor heart surgery (two stents inserted to unblock his arteries), and of course we convey our very best wishes to a manager that has given us some really good times over his three year tenure in charge of Spurs' team affairs.

So, while the likes of Friedel, Ekotto and Van der Vaart train at Spurs Lodge, a few experienced players have made the flight accompanied by some youngsters, and hopefully by enough key players to enable us to get at least a draw on what will be a very cold and quite intimidating night.

I do know that Andros Townsend, Dean Parrett, Ryan Fredericks and Jake Nicholson have travelled, but I understand that neither Danny Rose nor Giovani made the trip, due to injury. Rose has an ankle injury and Giovani has a calf problem. The possible starting line-up for tomorrow's game is Gomes; Fredericks, Bassong, Gallas, Townsend; Falque, Carroll, Livermore, Pienaar; Defoe and Pavlyuchenko. I assume that Harry Kane is also in the squad, along with Carlo Cudicini. Gallas and Pienaar have been confirmed as fit and ready to play.

Congratulations must go to Tom Carroll after his selection for the England under-21 squad for the coming International break. Andros Townsend is apparently on stand-by for this squad. As mentioned in the latest Spurs Odyssey monthly form guide, Tom Carroll has won plenty of admirers after some consistently skilful contributions, particularly in the Europa League games. Jake Livermore has received a great confidence boost with the story published today about the fact that West Ham were keen to take him in part-payment for Scott Parker, but Harry wanted to keep him at Spurs. The fact that Livermore has played 757 minutes in 12 of our 15 games so far confirms Harry's faith in Livermore. Only 5 of the Spurs squad have played more minutes than Jake so far this season.

Since losing to that Pavlyuchenko goal two weeks ago, Rubin Kazan have beaten Dinamo (Moscow) 2-0 away, and drawn 1-1 at home to Rostov. They have one league game remaining, and look set to remain in sixth place in the table. They'll be keen to beat us and improve their chances of qualifying for the knock out tages of this competition. The football they played at White Hart Lane clearly demonstrated they have some skill. Hopefully, the Spurs defence will be strong enough to hold them at bay.

This could be the longest journey Spurs have had to make for a competitive game. On close examination, the strength of the team is going to be almost on a par with that which beat Rubin Kazan at home, especially with Gallas at the back. I think all Spurs fans will be happy to bring back a point from the trip, and I am hopeful of such a result.

This Spurs fan will be watching the game from the comfort of his armchair, and I will offer you a "TV-eye" style report!

The referee for this game will be Mr. Florian Meyer from Germany. Herr Meyer has not failed to show at least 1 yellow card in any of the 34 matches in which he has officiiated over the last year. His last European fixture was the Milan v Plzen Champions League game on 28th September, when Milan won 2-0 and 4 players were booked.
