Harry calls for focus
Despite the near tragedy that we all witnessed at White Hart Lane on Saturday, manager Harry Redknapp has called for the players to be fully focussed upon their task at The Lane tomorrow, as there is a big match to be won in our on-going battle for a Champions League position.
Spurs fans, and football as one have been closely monitoring Fabrice Muamba's condition over the days since he collapsed during our FA Cup quarter-final, and thankfully, at the time of writing, it looks very much as if he is making good progress, although it will be a while before his prognosis is disclosed. We continue to unite in wishing him all the best, and I expect his name to be chanted by both sets of fans tomorrow night. That latest medical bulletin describing Muamba's condition as "serious" rather than "critically ill" encourages us to think once again about football.
Stoke are certainly not the team we would all have chosen for this occasion, when the focus and form of the players will be in question. In the 41 minutes played on Saturday, there was some bright football by Spurs going forward, in particular with Bale playing down the left as we all desire, but despite the presence of Parker and Modric in the middle there was too much space in the midfield for Bolton to advance and worry our make-shift defensive pairing of William Gallas and Ryan Nelsen.
We are in the bottom half of the current form guide over the last 6 games, having lost three consecutive games for the first time under Redknapp's leadership. Stoke are one of the few teams below us in that guide though, as they have lost 4 of their last 6 games, and in fact 5 of their last 7 league games. If you include their Cup matches, Stoke have lost 7 out of the last 10, having been knocked out of the Europa League by Valencia, and out of the FA Cup by Liverpool on Saturday. All those defeats have been by one goal though, with the exception of a 2-0 at Old Trafford.
There are only three points between the teams in 8th place and Stoke in fourteenth, and a further three points to reach Liverpool in seventh. There is no way that Tony Pulis's side will be holding back in what they will (rightly) perceive as another chance of qualifying for Europa League football, which they enjoyed and graced this season.
Stoke have beaten us twice this season in the Britannia Stadium this season. In September, the Carling Cup game ended 0-0 after extra time, but we lost 7-6 on penalties. Then, in December, after an eleven match unbeaten run, which includes ten victories, we fell foul to two goals by former Spur Matthew Etherington. Younes Kaboul was sent off. Adebayor had a good goal disallowed for offside, but did score a penalty. To say we were not happy with referee Chris Foy was a gross understatement. (Stoke 2 Spurs 1 - 11th December, 2011)
Last season we played Stoke days after a 4-0 defeat by Real Madrid in The Bernabeu. Peter Crouch went from zero to hero, having been sent off early in that Madrid game, then scoring two goals against Stoke in a 3-2 win. (Spurs 3 Stoke 2 - 9th April, 2011). Crouch will be just as keen to score against us tomorrow night, and the Spurs "X Factor" will be in play, with Etherington and Jonathan Woodgate also in the Stoke squad. Jonathan Woodgate has played 21 games for Stoke this season, 17 of which have been in the Premier League. That compares favourably with Ledley King, who has played in 18 games, all in the league. Ledley has played 90 minutes in more games though, but "Woody" could surely have still done a job for us. Another former Spur, Wilson Palacios, has not featured much for Stoke this season, but he has had injury problems.
Tony Pulis has few injuries to worry about with Sidibe the only long term absentee. Ricardo Fuller stupidly got himself sent off for stamping against Chelsea, and has two more matches to serve, including ours. Fuller hasn't been first choice for a long time though at Stoke, and that Chelsea game was his only start.
Spurs know they will have to be at their best. We are still waiting for the return to fitness of Adebayor and Lennon, and the main changes tomorrow are likely to be the return of Friedel, Kaboul and King to the defence. Chelsea wait for us on Saturday (they play at Man City tomorrow too), and three points from Stoke will be essential. I'll take us to do that - 2-1.
