People are asking about Adebayor
For a couple of weeks, many Spurs fans have been asking about the availability of Emmanuel Adebayor, who, since he was finally signed on a permanent deal from Manchester City, has played just 62 minutes football for Spurs so far this season. Adebayor has been out with a hamstring injury for the last 4 games, but is back in training this week, and might, just might be available for tomorrow's game against Aston Villa.
This is not to say that Jermain Defoe has been doing a bad job, because Jermain has been in great form, scoring four goals, and having played ten times longer than Adebayor. Jermain won plaudits last week after the United game, not for goal-scoring, but for his off-the-ball movement, which created an avenue for Gareth Bale's goal. Jermain also had a lot to do with the clinching third goal, after feeding the ball to Bale for his shot which was parried to the feet of Clint Dempsey.
In that same heroic victory at Old Trafford, Spurs desperately needed an outlet such as Adebayor, who could have held the ball up for longer spells than could the smaller Defoe. Adebayor, if he does appear, will probably start from the bench, but he was a Spurs talisman last season in both our games against Villa.
In the home game, played last November (Spurs 2 Aston Villa 0 - 21st November, 2011), Adebayor scored both goals which took Spurs to third place, where they stayed until March this year. It was an excellent team performance, and both goals came in the first half. The first was a deft bicycle kick, and the second was a tap-in, after the defence got confused over dealing with Bale's low and powerful cross. When we went to Villa Park for our penultimate game of the season, we had surrendered that third place, and Alex McLeish's Villa were still seeking to confirm their Premier League status. They did that by securing a point, with a rare goal by Ciaran Clark. Danny Rose was sent off early in the second half, but the ten men fought back well, and Adebayor scored from the penalty spot after a foul by Dunne on Sandro, who was not even facing goal in the Villa area.
Spurs are currently 6 points above Villa, whose only league win was at home to Swansea. This means that Spurs have finally overhauled Villa in the all-time Premier League points table to go fifth, behind Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. This puts us above the two other Premier League ever-presents - Villa and Everton. Man City are 322 points behind us in that table!
Paul Lambert took on a big challenge this season, when he left Norwich, where he achieved so much, and won adolation from The "Canaries" fans, to take on the Villa job. There have been a number of new arrivals, such as Australian midfielder Brett Holman, and Feyenoord's Karim El Ahmadi, and Ron Vlaar. Another new arrival is Belgian striker Christian Benteke, with whom our own Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele will be familiar.
Lambert has also released or sold Emile Heskey, James Collins, and Carlos Cuellar. Heskey has gone to Australia. Collins has gone back to West Ham, and Cuellar is clearly rated by his former manager Martin O'Neill. Thus, the Villa team bears an unfamiliar look, and no doubt needs some time to gel. They did have a big league cup success over Man City at The Etihad a week and a half ago, when they won 4-2, and they do still have former Spur Darren Bent, along with the pacy Gabriel Agbonlahor.
Spurs either played below full pace in Athens on Thursday night or had some tired legs, and there has to be some concern over their ability to play at full pelt tomorrow. Kyle Naughton and Benoit Assou-Ekotto are still two weeks away from fitness, so there is little chance of respite for Spurs player of the season (so far) Jan Vertonghen. he will surely be at left back again, with Gallas probably replacing Michael Dawson at the back. Sandro will return for Tom Huddlestone.
Spurs home fans are in need of a satisfying and convincing win, and despite my notes of caution above, I am taking Spurs to win this one 3-0, and to challenge the top four.
