Any preview of a Cup Match against Norwich has to start with Ralph Coates. Ralph was taken from this world nearly two years ago now, in December, 2010, aged just 66. On 3rd March 1973, Ralph Coates scored the goal that in his words "Changed my life", to give Spurs a 1-0 League Cup Final win over Norwich at the old Wembley stadium. Coates hadn't even started that game, and replaced John Pratt in the days when just one substitute was permitted.
When interviewed before Spurs' 1999 League Cup Final win over Leicester, Ralph said "Every time I visit Wembley, I look down on the pitch and see myself and the rest of the lads just as we were in '73. Martin Chivers hurling a massive throw-in in from the right . . . Alan Gilzean back-heading the ball goalwards - I'd actually been signed as Gillie's replacement
two seasons earlier but no-one could shift the old bugger - Mike England tapping it back, and me letting rip from around 18 yards. I cringe these days when I see players peeling off
their shirts in celebration after they've scored a goal, but I took off at such a speed I reckon I'm tearing round Wembley yet being chased by the rest of the Spurs players."
Ralph must have dined out on the strength of that goal on many occasions, and was a favourite in the Spurs hospitality lounges almost until the day he died.
Spurs don't have a great overall record in cup games against The Canaries, but have won both times they met in the League Cup. The last time we met in this competition was in January 1992, when the competition was sponsored by Rumbelows. In front of a crowd of just 29,471, Spurs won 2-1 with goals from Gary Lineker and Paul Walsh. The Norwich goal was scored by Robert Fleck.
The following season, Norwich would finish third in the Premier League, and in October 1993 they would enjoy one of their finest hours - a 2-1 away victory against Bayern Munich. Ruel Fox, who would come to Spurs later in the 90s played in both our League Cup game and against Bayern Munich. Two former Spurs players, Ian Crook and Mark Bowen featured in the league cup game in 1992. Both had made their Spurs debuts in the early 80s against Coventry, but on different dates.
There have been many well-known names associated with both clubs down the years including Maurice Norman, Martin Peters, Martin Chivers, Jimmy Neighbour and Tim Sherwood, but now we have former Spurs hero Chris Hughton in the Norwich fold.
Chris Hughton got a great reception when he brought his Norwich team to White Hart Lane earlier thtis season for Premier League action, and they gained a respectable draw from a team which was still finding its feet under their new Head Coach. We were disappointed with our start then, but now sit in the top four!
Since then, Hughton has led his team to a hard fought 1-0 win over Arsenal for their first league win of the season, and last Saturday they got a point at Villa Park, which could easily have been two more in a game when Villa had a player sent off.
Chris Hughton played for Spurs in the 1984 FA Cup meeting against Norwich. He missed the drawn home match, but played at Carrow Road in the replay, which we lost 2-1. Hughton and Spurs would console themselves with the historic UEFA Cup win later that season against Anderlecht.
Chris might have Spurs in his heart, but he has done a fully professional job wherever he has gone since leaving at the same time as Martin Jol was so summarily dismissed in 2007 in favour of Juande Ramos, and Hughton suffered the same fate, as he was Martin Jol's deputy. He got Newcastle promoted, but was then replaced by Alan Pardew, and he fought a hard league and European campaign with Birmingham last season, before being snapped up by Norwich. That game last Saturday had special meaning of course, because Villa are managed by the man Hughton replaced - Paul Lambert.
It's hard to foresee the line-ups in tomorrow's game, but I suspect both teams will be quite strong. So, it will be a hard fought battle in the "Canaries' cage", but I'll take Spurs to win it by the odd goal.
