Olympic effort required by Spurs

It's not do or die for Spurs as they visit the Olympic Stadium in Rome for Match Day 5 in Group J of the Europa League, but a positive result would make us odds on to qualify for the knock-out phase in the New Year. A win would be ideal, of course, but with a truly vital home game against West Ham on Sunday, Andre Villas-Boas is surely going to have to make one or two adjustments to the team in Rome.

Hat-trick hero Jermain Defoe will either take a rest for this one, or just maybe he will play beside Adebayor in another adventurous line-up. With Adebayor having to sit out our next three league games after his feet in the air tackle last Saturday, he has to play the lead role in Rome, I would have thought.

Lazio are still going well in Serie A, and sit in fifth place after 13 games, but 9 points behind leaders Juventus, who are truly back in the big time after their troubles in recent years, with a great win over European Champions Chelsea last night.

After our home game against Lazio, which was drawn 0-0, the Italians suffered a dip in their league form. They had been in second place when they met us, after winning their first three games, but then they lost at home to Genoa and away to Napoli, before finding winning ways again.

Lazio next won four games on the trot, including a 1-0 win over Maribor, but then had another dip. They've won two of their last seven games. Lazio are of course in pole position in our Group, and a win would secure their quaification for the next phase. Such a win could present problems for Spurs, as Lazio could relax for their last game in Maribor, whilst we would be under pressure at home to Panathinaikos. We can only take one game at a time though, and must hope that we can secure at least a point in Rome.

Lazio have scored three goals in both their last two home games against Panathinaikos, and in the local derby against Roma, with whom they share the Olympic Stadium. 34 year old Miroslav Klose is as much of a threat as ever, having scored 7 goals for club and country in his last 9 games. The Cech striker Libor Kozak scored twice against Panathinaikos, but is not a regular starter in all games. Braziliian midfielder Hernanes and the Italian midfielder Antonio Candreva also offer goals regularly.

Andre Villas-Boas will name a strongish side, but of course he still has players unavailable. Dembele is said to be very close to fitness, but would presumably be held back till Sunday. Steven Caulker missed Saturday's game with a knock, and might also be saved for West Ham. The back four could be Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen and Naughton. Your guess is as good as mine regarding goalkeeper options, after Hugo Lloris got the nod over Friedel at Arsenal.

Having seen the under-21s play on Sunday at Nantwich, Tom Carroll and Yago Falque played no part in that game, and I would expect both to feature tomorrow, with Falque perhaps on the bench. Andros Townsend played a full, and exciting 90 minutes against the Stoke youngsters, but I suspect he'll be second fiddle to Gareth Bale, from whom we hope to see a scintillating performance.

I'll go for another draw in this game. I don't get home until the early hours of Saturday, so there will be no website updates until then. I shall try and get the post-match survey out as usual though.
