Do you remember when we used to fear Liverpool?
When Liverpool were part of the original "Top Four Cartel", they were probably the team of that group that we feared least, but for many years it is a fact that Liverpool were a team to be feared.
Now we've finished above them in the last three seasons in the Premier League, and you have to go back a long, long way since that happened. We've even beaten them away in recent seasons (May 2011), and put four past them in the corresponding game last season (Spurs 4 Liverpool 0 - 18th September, 2011). Whilst we have only one two of our away league games against them, at home we have beaten "The Reds" 10 times and lost just five of the 20 Premier League games at The Lane.
In that game last year, Liverpool had two players sent off for two bookable offences. Charlie Adam had to leave the pitch as early as the 27th minute, after chopping down Modric and Parker, and Skrtel went after 62 minutes after two fouls on Gareth Bale. Adam is now at a club more suited to his style - Stoke City, after new manager Brendan Rodgers started the process of either off-loading or demoting some of previous manager Kenny Dalglish's dodgy signings.
We saw one of those departures on Sunday - Andy Carroll - who managed to score his first goal of the season, and only his seventh league goal in 53 games since Dalglish splashed out most of the Torres money on the former Newcastle player, who had not even established himself as a Premier League player. Yes, Carroll has collected nine England caps, and scored two goals in the process, but he rarely sets the stage alight, does he? Carroll is on a season-long loan at Upton Park.
Rodgers also advised Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson that they would have a battle to secure a first team place. One of Rodgers' decisions has been to instal the exciting 17 year old Raheem Sterling on the right wing. Sterling has made 12 league starts, and also won his first full England cap in the friendly in Sweden two weeks ago.
Liverpool do find themselves leaning heavily upon the goal-scoring prowess of the notorious Luis Suarez, and if he gets an injury they will have problems, because he tops the Premier League goal-scoring chart with 10 of Liverpool's 17 league goals at this time. Much as you might hate him, Suarez's take down and score against Newcastle on November 4th was one of the very finest goals in the history of the Premier League. That goal was scored from a long ball by left back Jose Enrique who actually played further forward for Liverpool at Swansea on Sunday, displaying some good attacking and creative skills.
Jamie Carragher was recently quoted as saying that the top four is still a realistic target for Liverpool, but they need to win more and draw less of their games to achieve that target. Liverpool sit four points behind Spurs going into this game.
Brendan Rodgers took his new team to his old stomping ground at The Liberty Stadium, Swansea on Sunday, and they drew 0-0, but between them the two sides managed more passes than in any other Premier League game last week-end.
The best news for Spurs is that Sandro, having been stretchered off near the end of the West Ham game is actually fit and available to play in this game. I suspect that his pace and support is going to be needed to help the central defence cope with the pace, skill and gamesmanship of Mr. Suarez. Spurs might be able to start Dembele, which would be another boost, and would drive us to another good attacking performance.
With Clint Dempsey finding his form and confidence on Sunday, there is every reason for Spurs fans to think positively about this game. I think we will win 2-1.
The referee tonight is Phil Dowd, whose last game in charge of Spurs was the 2-1 win over QPR.
