The nouveau riche have a long way to go
The nouveau riche club that is present day Manchester City has a long, long way to go before their Premier League record against Spurs reaches equalibrium. Until the last couple of seasons, City have been one of the punch bags of the Premier League for Spurs. Even now, having lost the last two league games at the Etihad Stadium against City, Spurs have lost just 6 out of 30 Premier League meetings.
Last season's league "double" over Spurs was their first over us in the Premier League. The last occasion City managed that feat was in the last season of the old Division One, when they won both games 1-0. Nial Quinn scored in the game at White Hart Lane in October 1991, and David White scored at Maine Road in February, 1992.
Ten years ago, City were still playing at Maine Road, and Spurs won their last meeting there 3-2, with goals by Perry, Davies and Poyet. The late Dean Richards was Spurs' captain for the night, and City's side included Marc-Vivien Foe, who tragically died on the football pitch playing for his country the following summer. Foe scored City's last ever goal at Maine Road, and as a mark of respect his old number 23 squad number has been "retired" since his death. (Man City 2 Spurs 3 - December, 23rd 2002)
Back to the current day, and all that money and power brings expectations and pressure upon manager Roberto Mancini. For all the investment in players transfer fees and exorbitant wages, last year's Premier League title and the preceding year's FA Cup does not seem sufficient return, and now they are struggling in their Champions League "Group of Death" whic also features Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax Amsterdam - all true champions of their respective countries. Mancini moaned of course, but City need to grab more European co-efficient points to lift their future seeding status.
Even Spurs, with their one season in the Champions League managed to reach the quarter-finals, and graced the competition.
City are unbeaten in this year's Premier League, but they still haven't managed to set the stage alight in the same way as they did last season. Last week, West Ham got a deserved point off City at Upton Park, and managed to keep a clean sheet, despite the efforts of Balotelli, Dzeko, Nasri, Tevez, Aguero, Garcia, and even recent signing Scott Sinclair who got a rare outing as a 90th minute substitute. Sinclair has played just 178 minutes football for his new club. Maybe he was drawn to Manchester by girlfriend Helen Flanagan, once of Coronation Street and soon to be seen in ITV's jungle programme.
Last season's game at Man City included perhaps THE pivotal moment in Spurs season. We went into the game in third place, five points behind City, and had come back from 2-0 down to level the scores thanks to Jermain Defoe and Gareth Bale. Spurs were genuinely being quoted as title contenders, and might have gone onto better things had Defoe finished his "Gazza-like" chance at the back post from Bale's cross to make it 3-2 to Spurs. However, the game finished 3-2 to City with a last minute penalty by Balotelli after a fateful foul by Ledley King.
Can Spurs get a result tomorrow? The odds are against us, but AVB has promised an "audacious" approach to the game. We will need Sandro to be fit at the back of midfield, that's for sure. Will Adebayor play against his old team for the first time? That remains to be seen. City's defence was shown to have frailties in Tuesday night's Champions League game, and even Yaya Toure was not infallible in that department at corners.
I'll be honest. I do not think we will get anything out of this game, but I'll be there cheering on my boys, hoping for the best!
