Spurs seeking a rare double

As a result of our win at Old Trafford in September, for the first time in 23 years we can talk about the possibility of Spurs managing a rare league "Double" over Manchester United. We did achieve the magical "double" in the season when we last beat United at Old Trafford, in the 1989-90 season.

In December, 1989, Gary Lineker had been our hero, when he scored the solitary goal at Old Trafford. Then, in the return match at White Hart Lane on 21st April, 1990, both Lineker and Paul Gascoigne scored our goals. Only Steve Bruce could reply for United, who finished 13th that season, compared to our third. In the seasons since then, we have yet to match that third place. Incidentally, we actually beat United three times that season, as we beat them 3-0 (also at Old Trafford) in the League Cup. Vinny Samways, Lineker, and Nayim had scored the Spurs goals on that occasion.

This talk of a "double" emanates of course from our fantastic 3-2 win at Old Trafford last September. Jan Vertonghen, playing at left back, powered forward in only the second minute, shared a one-two pass with Gareth Bale, before going all the way to the United box, hitting a shot which was ultimately deemed an own goal by Jonny Evans in front of the Stretford End. Bale made it two with a great right-footed goal in the 32nd minute, and then we had a mad three minutes early in the second half, when United came back, Clint Dempsey re-instated the two goal lead, then Kagawa made it 3-2 and an edgy second half for Spurs, as "The Red Devils" piled forward towards the Spurs goal.

In truth, Spurs' home fans have yet to experience some of the highs that we have had on the road. Winning at Old Trafford was clearly the best of those away wins, but Gareth Bale's performance and the 4-0 win at Villa Park on boxing Day was pretty neat too!

Too often, at White Hart Lane, we have faced teams that put ten men behind the ball, making it very difficult for the best of teams to break them down. We had this experience last week at Loftus Road. Manchester United face this week-in, week-out, and have done for years with their multiple Premier League winning experience.

United will, of course, come to win and as always that will give us a chance to express ourselves too. We say this every year, but it's been the same down the years. We will get an exciting game of football, and a 0-0 is highly doubtful.

Robin van Persie will come in for a bit of stick from the home fans, but he has to be respected very highly of course, leading the Premier League score-charts with 17 league goals to his name, and scorer of 21 goals for his new team in all competitions. Van Persie has scored in 9 of his last 10 games, so he is in very lethal form. The Spurs defence will have to be at their sharpest, looking out for the Dutchman's sharp movement, and great scoring prowess. Van Persie has surely been Sir Alex Ferguson's best buy for several years.

Losing the Premier League title so cruelly on the last day of last season clearly stung United into action this season, and despite an opening day defeat at Goodison Park, and a slow start to the season, United have now held top spot since November, and they currently sit 7 points above their main rivals, the nouveau riche Manchester City. United have drawn only one league game (at Swansea) and lost three of their Premier League matches. Norwich are the only other victors after Everton and Spurs.

We've only ever beaten United away 11 times in league matches, but have managed that elusive "double" on 6 of those occasions. Perhaps fate will be on our side this week. The trouble is we haven't beaten them at home now since 19th May 2001, when Willem Korsten scored twice in his last competitive game for Spurs. We've had eleven failed attempts since then, and only managed to draw on three occasions.

Can we do it this Sunday? Of course we can! Will we do it? That will require a team performance as good as, or better than the one we gave at Old Trafford in September. It will require Bale to be at his very best. The defence will need to be as sharp as Van Persie. Defoe will need to regain his scoring form (only one goal in his last seven games). Both our full backs will need to defend strongly, and allow no space to whoever is trying to feed Van Persie. That could include Wayne Rooney, available again after his recent injury.

The referee for this game will be Chris Foy, who also refereed our win at Old Trafford, and the game at Craven Cottage this season.

Would I be so rash as to predict a Spurs win this Sunday? Well, no, but we could do it. Let's hope it's a humdinger!
