Les Geordies sont a venir!
(The Geordies are coming)
There has been a lot said about the influx of Frenchmen to Tyneside in the January transfer window, and I am not going to stop the trend here!
It is worth comparing the Newcastle team that faced us in August at St. James' Park (Newcastle 2 Spurs 1 - 18.08.12), with that which dramatically beat Chelsea last Saturday.
Newcastle team v Spurs:-
Krul; Simpson, S. Taylor, Perch, Santon; Cabaye (sub Anita, 71), Ben Arfa, Tiote, Gutierrez (Capt.), Cisse, Demba Ba (sub Obertan, 85)
Newcastle team v Chelsea:-
Krul; Debuchy, S. Taylor, Coloccini, Santon; Perch, Cabaye; Gouffran (sub Marveaux, 84), Sissoko (sub Yanga-M'Biwa, 90), Gutierrez; Cisse
Three of the Geordies six new French signings started the game last week, and one other came on as a substitute. It was a similar story in their preceding game at Villa Park. Newcastle have won these last two games, and the influx of new blood has clearly been much-needed and effective, after a run of 10 games with only one victory (QPR) and a draw (Norwich). Newcastle even went out of the FA Cup in the Third Round at Brigthon's AMEX stadium.
There are now no less than 11 French players in the Newcastle squad, and one or two other French speaking players too, I think. Maybe Alan Pardew is becoming Arsene Wenger in disguise!
These two wins have created a handy 6 point gap now between Newcastle and the relegation zone, and at this stage of the season that is a considerable gap. They still have work to do of course, and the "Magpies" will be more formidable opposition than we might have anticipated before all the new signings. The most influential of these would appear to be 23 year old MOussa Sissoko, signed from Toulouse. Sissoko is 23 and already has 6 full International caps. He scored two goals against Chelsea to ensure a memorable home debut.
Newcastle have been missing their midfield enforcer Tiote, who has been on duty in South Africa. Tiote scored for The Ivory Coast in Sunday's quarter final, but his team lost to Nigeria. Tiote may, like Adebayor for Spurs, be seen in Saturday's game. Newcastle also had to do without Tiote at times because of injury, which is keeping the speedy and effective Ben Arfa out at present.
An established Newcastle player Yohan Cabaye was also absent through injury for much of their depressing run, so he was also a big miss for them.
A big miss they have yet to replace was of course Demba Ba, their top scorer, who was signed by Chelsea, taking advantage of a release clause in Ba's contract. Ba had scored 13 league goals, and Papisse Cisse is second highest scorer with just 5 league goals.
Like Spurs, Newcastle have a Europa League home match next Thursday, but this match will take priority for both clubs.
This time last year, Spurs trounced Newcastle 5-0 at White Hart Lane . Even Louis Saha got two goals in a match featuring some scintillating football by Spurs, who were 4-0 up at half-time. That win came at the end of a dramatic week in which Harry Redknapp had been acquitted after a tax evasion trial, and had then been firmly linked with the newly vacated England job. We looked in good shape for a Champions League slot too, but we all know what happened after that.
Without the injured Defoe, and possibly without a jaded Adebayor, Spurs might be unchanged from last week's win over West Brom, with Gareth Bale likely to be the key to any Spurs success. I think we will keep Newcastle at bay, and I'll take us to win 2-0. A win would put us above Chelsea for a couple of hours (they play Wigan later in the afternoon), but would leave Everton and Arsenal chasing us. Both have difficult away fixtures to play.
One concern for Spurs will be the fitness of both Clint Dempsey and Benoit Assou-Ekotto, both of whom faced long journeys for their mid-week International games. It's not only Adebayor who has been travelling this week. Spurs have a full training session tomorrow (Friday) when Adre Villas-Boas will make his final assessment of his squad for the Newcastle game.

Saturday's match referee will be Phil Dowd, who we have seen in our home victories over QPR and Liverpool this season. He's not doing bad for us this season then!
