AVB wants to bag The Baggies!
When 32 year old Northern Ireland International centre-back Gareth McAuley scored his 82nd minute goal against Chelsea on 3rd March this year, the death knell sounded for Andre Villas-Boas, whose Chelsea career ended with that 1-0 defeat. Our new head coach, more than anyone, will surely be determined to reap three points tomorrow in our first home game of the season.
Every new player or coach is on probation with any set of fans, but more particularly, Spurs fans, who will cheer their team on with relish, but will need a few wins to be assured that their team remains on the right path. Transfer business has yet to be completed, but we have this week confirmed the permanent return of Emmanuel Adebayor. In doing so the confidence of Jermain Defoe may have been affected, as his initial hold on the striker's position will be threatened. Whether Adebayor is fit enough to play tomorrow remains to be seen.
Former Spurs reserve and West Brom goalkeeper Marton Fulop never played a first team game for our club, but twice in recent years had a great influence in our club's Champions League history.
On Wednesday 5th May, 2010 when Spurs beat Man City to qualify for the Champions League Fulop was an emergency loan keeper from Sunderland, and let in the decisive Peter Crouch header that gave us the vital win. In fairness, Fulop bore no blame for that goal. However, on the last day of last season, if only Fulop had managed just one and not two elementary goalkeeping howlers when playing for West Brom against Arsenal, then Spurs would have finished third, and would have qualified for this year's Champions League in place of our neighbours and greatest footballing enemies. Maybe it's just as well that Fulop has now been transferred out of harm's way to Asteras Tripolis in Greece. he can't hurt us there, can he?
Fulop played in place of the injured Ben Foster in that Arsenal game. Foster was on loan last season, but has now signed permanently from Championship club Birmingham. Roy Hodgson was of course the "Baggies'" manager last season, and his deputy Steve Clarke has been appointed as his replacement.
West Brom had a great start last week, beating Liverpool 3-0 thanks to a cracking drive by Zoltan Gera (playing his first game since last November); an Odemwingie penalty (much better than a pathetic dollied effort by Shane Long that was held by Reina with ease); and a goal by Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku, who is a Belgian Internation team-mate of our own Jan Vertonghen.
Vertonghen is likely to make his official debut tomorrow, as Younes Kaboul has suffered a sore knee. William Gallas will surely continue as Captain. I understand that former club captain, the honourable Ledley King, will be presented to the crowd at half-time. The Spurs Odyssey tribute to Ledley King can be read here.
It was a brilliant Jermain Defoe goal that won the game the last time we met West Brom, at White Hart Lane on January 3rd this year. Roy Hodgson was the "Baggies" coach then, and he used the kind of tactics that got England to the quarter-finals of this year's Euro tournament. It wasn't fun, but it was so nearly effective. Judging by last week's performance against Liverpool, the Steve Clarke inspired West Brom team will be a different kettle of fish, and might present a difficult challenge for a new Spurs team still finding their feet under new management.
I'll take Spurs to be inspired, motivated and effective, and will go for a 3-1 win.
Our referee tomorrow will be Mike Dean, who is one of our favourites, taking his assessments over the last 12 Spurs games into consideration.
