Tin hats ready!

Congratulations to Cardiff City for winning promotion to the Premier League. They were the first of the three promoted teams to win their place, and therefore became the 46th team to play in the Premier League since its establishment in 1992. That's exactly half of the 92 members of the Premier League and Football League.

Cardiff had been out of the top tier of English football since 1962, 51 years ago, and historically have played 15 seasons in the top flight. Whilst we played them in Division Two in 1977-78, we have not met Cardiff in top flight action since January 1962. That, of course, is because "The Bluebirds" have been out of the top flight all those years. For such a proud club, that absence has been hard to bear. They came close to promotion under previous manager Dave Jones, who just could not successfully negotiate the play-offs, but under Malky Mackay, they convincingly won the Championship last season.

Cardiff is a club with a proud history. They are famous throughout the land for being the first club from outside England to win the FA Cup (by beating Arsenal in 1927), and they made it back to Wembley in 2008, where they were beaten by Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth. Whilst they are still known as "The Bluebirds", Cardiff fans have to travel to see their team in their traditional strip, as the new owners switched their home colours to red, to conform to brand identification for the sponsors. Maybe that decision has now been forgiven, bearing in mind promotion to English football's elite.

Cardiff will be keen to emulate their fierce rivals, Swansea, who have made it into Europe this season (and made a great start with that win over valencia). Like Swansea, Cardiff is a club with European football experience, as both clubs regularly won the old Welsh Cup, and represented their country in the European Cup-Winners Cup. Cardiff once made it as far as the quarter-finals, ultimately beaten by Real Madrid. In addition, they reached the semi-finals of that competition in 1968, beaten by Hamburg. Now though, if they made it to Europe they would represent England, as they play in the English Premier League.

Much as Cardiff fans are fervently nationalist, it's a great irony that they inhabit English football, but gloriously rely upon the Welsh anthem to fire up the home atmosphere before home games. I did think that perhaps Steven Caulker was their only English player, but in fact their squad has a total of 20 English players with only 6 Welshmen.

One of those Welshmen is of course Craig Bellamy in whom Harry Redknapp expressed an interest when he was in charge of Spurs. Bellamy is now 34, but still a fiery competitor. He was absent from last week's draw at Hull, and has had a knee injury, but he may be fit for tomorrow's game. Former Manchester United loanee to Tottenham, Fraizer campbell has been a regular this season, and gleefully scored twice in Cardiff's fabulous 3-2 win over Title hopefuls Manchester City in the club's first home Premier League game.

That Man City result made the rest of the league sit up, and with a draw at home to Everton in their next game, Mackay's side has already displayed some resilience and intent to future visitors to the new Cardiff City stadium, opened in 2009. This will therefore be our first visit to this venue.

Our last visit to Cardiff was the subject of one of my favourite match reports on Spurs Odyssey, but (I kid you not) my least favourite away trip in nearly 50 years of following Tottenham Hotspur away from home. (Cardiff v Spurs - FA Cup Rd 3 - 07.01.07). I have never encountered such hostility, but we fans, and Spurs survived and won the FA Cup replay that followed convincingly. According to the Premier League's official site, the welcome for away fans is much more positive these days. (Away supporters sold on warm Cardiff welcome). However, I wouldn't advise wearing colours if you want a pre-match drink tomorrow!

So, it's Welsh visas and tin hats at the ready for tomorrow's trip to Cardiff. A hot welcome is assured, and a highly competitive game. Malky Mackay has already been quoted as saying that the sale of Bale has enabled Spurs to strengthen, and he will be working hard to stem the creativity of Eriksen; the scoring threat of Soldado, and everything else offered by the new and stronger Spurs team. Having beaten star-studded Man City, Mackay's pep talk to his players will be to remind them they have done it before, and can do it again.

It will be a tough game for Spurs, who picked up three injury problems on Thursday, with Rose, Dembele and Kaboul suffering. of those, Dembele and Kaboul are likely to be available, with Vlad Chriches at last available. I think maybe Vlad will have to wait on the bench for a debut, and a fit Kaboul can re-inforce the defence in Rose's absence.

I fancy Spurs to come through this ordeal by the odd goal in three, with Cardiff possibly becoming the only team other than Arsenal to get a goal past our defence so far this season.

The referee for this game will be Mark Clattenburg, who has already looked after us this season, when we won at Crystal Palace.

Did you know?:- Cardiff's first ever game in the top division took place on Saturday 27 August 1921 at home to the mighty Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs won the game 1-0 with a goal from Jimmy Banks. It was thus the first ever goal scored in the top division in Wales. (Thanks to Declan Mulcahy for this piece of information)
