Give us some Olés Spurs!
Recently appointed Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brings his team to White Hart Lane tomorrow desperate for at least a share of the points. Solskjaer has won just one of seven league games since his appointment, and that was against Norwich, who beat us last week. Perhaps that statistic will give the Norwegian some hope for this game.
Cardiff owner Vincent Tan has been the subject of almost never-ending controversy since taking control of the club, what with the change of home strip, and the sacking of the man who brought Cardiff into the Premier League - Malky Mackay. Mackay won just one of his last ten Premier League games, so Solskjaer's record is hardly any better so far.
Cardiff's home fans have suffered the ignominy of being dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Wigan, and then last week lost 4-0 at home to Hull. Former Spur Tom Huddlestone scored his second goal of the season, and Spurs loanee Jake Livermore scored his third league goal of the season. If Livermore does not come back to Spurs, he's going to attract a decent fee, and another handsome profit for the club.
When Spurs beat Cardiff in September it was thanks to a late, late goal by Paulinho, created by two late subs - Lewis Holtby and Erik Lamela, neither of whom are available for Spurs now for different reasons. Holtby is pleasing the new Fulham manager, and possibly acting as his interpreter, whilst we haven't seen Lamela in action so far in 2014. If he stays at Spurs, it looks as if it will be next season before he gets a chance to impress, as he will have little chance in the remaining games once he does regain fitness.
This will be only the fourth league meeting between the two sides in the last 50 years, and the first top flght meeting at White Hart Lane since September 1962. That game was the third consecutive 3-2 result in the fixture. Spurs had won by that scoreline in the Double season at home, but lost the away game. Former Swansea man Cliff Jones must have been happy to have opened the scoring for Spurs, with Bobby Smith and Danny Blanchflower also scoring in the September 1961 game.
This will be Steven Caulker's first game at White Hart Lane for an opposition side. Spurs will be hoping that he can help Cardiff avoid relegation, because such an event would attract a £2 million bonus on his transfer fee paid by the "Bluebirds". Very few players have played for both Spurs and Cardiff over the years, but they do recently include Chris Gunter and Wayne Routledge. Routledge played at Cardiff on loan, whilst on Aston Villa's books, whilst Spurs signed full back Gunter from Cardiff. he is now playing at Reading. Cardiff currently include striker Fraizer Campbell, once a loan player at Spurs.
Spurs will hopefully welcome back Kyle Walker at right back, following his hip injury. Sandro may also make his first Premier League start under Sherwood. There is no specific news about Danny Rose, so we will see either Naughton or Fryers on that side of the defence. Vlad Chiriches' absence also continues, so we rely upon the continuing fitness of Dawson and Vertonghen.
So, there's an Ole in charge of Cardiff, but Spurs could do with some Olés and a convincing home win, before we face the tough programme for most of March, which includes Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as Benfica at home and away.
I think we will see a good win, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Spurs concede a goal. I'll go for a 3-1 win.
Tomorrow's referee will be Phil Dowd. Spurs have won their last five games with him in charge, and are unbeaten in the last seven such games.
· On this date 1999, we beat Southampton 3-0 at home. Little Jose Dominguez scored our third goal.
